That's funny, I've been meaning to start a thread about what my fellow Curbco shoppers leave behind. When I started and was using a Chev Lumina, I would collect any little piece of metal I came across, nothing left behind, not a pop can or hinge, etc. Now I have the Montana and I find myself looking over things like umbrella strollers, folding chairs (not aluminum ones), and other small items that I think aren't worth stopping for when I could find a tv, computer or even a stove around the corner that might not be there in 5 minutes.
So...what do you leave behind, if anything, and why?
METAL IS MY MISTRESS...PLEASE DON'T TELL MY WIFE!
HA HA! Yep.. it's the curse of a scrapper. My wife gets on me as to why I pick stuff up like that.. I said "I see a $10 bill" I said "If you were driving down the street and saw a $10 bill laying on the ground- would you stop and get it?" She said "Well of Course" Yep.. I see the same thing.. just from a different perspective!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!
When I saw the title of the post, I first imagined something like this:
Made of scrap, of course!
Ive done stuff like that before, I once brought a whole bed frame with me on the train. Another time I was in the city and happened upon 3 car batteries and 2 motorcycle batteries. I had just gotten out of work, didnt have any type of carriage with me, so I put the motorcycle batteries in my backpack, picked up 2 car batteries in each hand and put the 3rd one between my arm. Carried them a block to the subway stairs, brought them down 2 flights of stairs then the one with no handle started leaking so I couldnt put it between my arm anymore, so when the train came I threw 2 of them inside and then grabbed the leaking one and jumped in the train, a couple of people thought I had bombs. I had to transfer to another train to get home(thankfully it was just across the platform) so I got them off and then on again the same way.
The night before last i was riding my bike home at around midnight and i seen this flat screen tv. I kept riding about a half a block but couldnt help myself so i went back. I wasnt expecting it to weigh roughly 75lbs. I put the base against my seatpost laid the back on my bars and pushed it a half mile home. Got to looking and its a 50"L.E.D. the glass infront of the scrren(like a smartphone) is cracked but not bad. Plugged it in and works perfect.
I used to go out on every break at work to the neighbouring factories and stores and scope out their dumpsters, had permission from the landlord who saw me one day and thought I was dumping trash, I said no, I was taking it if anything and he said go right ahead, keeps his dumpster costs down. I have found so many things in those 2 dumpsters I can't remember them all. My fave is definitely the cash register with $95 in it. If I can carry it I would, otherwise I would rush back with the car (no van yet) and snatch it up. I've probably made like $200-$300 off the 2 alone.
