    Scammed

Was working with my uncle all last week and he was paying me a good amount per hour and I was on fall break. We were clearing out homes and there was 2 dumpsters of trash and I got a truckload of junk metal out of it. I went last night, loaded it, and since it was all shred I took it to a place that only buys shred called u-pull-it in Omaha, where I live. I pulled in, dumped my metal, and I got $49 so I thought not bad for 1 hour of work, until I saw the ticket. 6cents/POUND... How much are u guys getting!?!?!

You're in the midwest and from what I can tell, those are where the worst prices are for steel and tin

Now I can pretty much bet that a "shred only" place will sort the stuff they buy and feed it to a larger yard and make their money that way. It’s on you to check the price before you dump the stuff by either calling ahead or asking when you get there. So if this is your “easy money” yard then, well, be happy with what you got. Otherwise, go somewhere else that pays better.

Shred has been 10 cents a pound almost all year but I still call before I go. Always call first.

Did you have to give your uncle some of the metal money?

You weren't scammed. You could have easily stepped inside, asked what they were paying, and if you didn't like .06/lb turn around and leave.

Now, if you stepped inside and they told you .09/lb, then paid you .06 you could say you were scammed.

As a geographer, I should make a map of light steel prices a round the country. It might be interesting. In Sioux Falls, with 1 place that takes steel, its now nickel a pound for "tin". Was 5.5 cents a month or so ago. If you were getting 9 cents in NB recently, consider you're self lucky. How many places in NB do you know of that melts down steel and makes new products out of it? I'm no expert on your state but I know of only 1, a NuCor mini-mill in Norfolk. How many places to you think melts down scrap steel and remakes it into products in what we used to call the "Industrial Midwest" or the old industrial "Northeast". Even with U.S manufacturing way down from decades past, the yards in those areas still have way more markets for their shred than we do here on the industrial fringes. That's why those guys in such places get more for their steel.

Look up the terms "distance decay" and "friction of distance". There's a lot more to geography than just learning state capitals...
