I for one don't understand the disregard for proper handling of these units. Get certified and double your money. Honestly I think it's laziness. I've said it before as well as many others, if you can't do it right don't do it.

How do you know that most broken ones that are older have none left? Are you attempting to properly recover the refrigerant and after you've pulled the required vacuum, you realize that there was nothing there, or are you cutting the lines and hoping nothing flies? I would think twice before I posted something like this. Never know if the EPA is watching. I'd hate to see a young guy like you get fined $37,500 for the intentional release of refrigerant.
Let them beouch. I became a member because of the integrity of its members to do things right. For me if I can't make a profit without breaking regs or laws I don't f**k with it. We got a new member on here that is so concerned about the CRT issue that he seems willing to lose money to improve the situation in this country. Every one wants to make a buck, and that's good. But if it means doing things the wrong way and then advocating it on this forum then something needs to change. I don't know, maybe I am wrong and should move on.

It is simply a personal experience I am saying. I do not cut them open without draining the freon, but I have dealt with many and have had many drained and I was stating they had little to no refrigerant. Sorry if it came across as "cut it and it may or may not be empty" but it wasn't really advice, just something I've noticed from experience. I will edit that and make it sound different though.
