A 245 width tire will be great! I'm assuming that your truck isn't a dually.
I had an E350 box van that had 235/85/16s on the rear and 265s on the front. I switched the fronts to 245s (Fronts were bald when I got the truck), and the handling was unchanged.
We ran 245s on an old Chevrolet K2500, and they worked just fine- both on and off road. I believe they were Uniroyal Liberators.
I haven't bought tires for my truck in ages. I get them for free like everyone else does.
You'd be amazed what people throw out. I have two Deltas on a truck that still have the little "nipples" on them. I keep a stash of tires. Compared to $100, free is a whole lot better. Plus, if I ever sell the truck, I can easily sell truck tires on Craigslist.
