Crappy Morning turned into an awesome Day :)

found next to nothing last night on trash night... went out at 6am and got a very little bit... a washing machine which I pulled the and a sink with a brass faucet... I went home around 8am and went to the woods to pick up some stuff I had scouted but needed to cut or unbury etc. and even picked up a rear door to a mini van in a dumpster.... went to the scrap yard around 2pm Long story short... alot of hours spent and only made off with $44... got an idea to drive the neighborhood and look to see if there were any Car batteries in the driveways or by the trash cans which seems to be pretty common place for junk batteries... In about an hour I found a total of 8 batteries.. Nobody was home at all the houses ( weird) except for one person who said to come back later after her boyfriend got home.. so I wrote down the addresses ... went back out around 5pm and all the people were now home at the houses and Everybody let me have their batteries...

One guy gave me a battery, an aluminum Radiator and a Heater Core and took down my number for when he is doing plumbing jobs !!

One person was not home and a neighbor came out to see what I wanted.. when I told them I was going to ask for the battery the neighbor gave me 2!! Another house I had gone to earlier the lady said she had to ask her boyfriend if i could have it and to come back later... When I came back they gave me a battery, 2 air conditioners, a microwave, some copper pipe and a metal tool box !!!

I know there are some scrappers in my area who would see the batteries in people's driveway or by their cans and actually go onto the property and just take it ( basically steal) ..
By doing it the RIGHT WAY and asking permission.. I got 2 more batteries than expected and all that other stuff i mentioned and some people that might be sources of more stuff in the future..

Final Score for my hour of scouting and 45 minutes of door knocking ...
11 batteries , 2 ACs ,microwave, a metal tool box, about 5lbs of copper pipe. I cant wait to bring it all to the yard in addition to the stuff I find Sunday Night !
gonna be a nice score !

Good story. Thanks for sharing. Yep, ya gotta ask.

We should collectively write a "Scrappers Code of Ethics". Any thoughts?

Rule 1: Always put yourself in the homeowner's shoes. Kind of the "Golden Rule".

yeah i find most people will definitely let you take the batteries they have laying around their house if you ask.... if they're not home i actually leave a little business card i made up in the mailbox... advertising myself as a battery recycler who will pick up and pay... now that i'm getting $10 per battery at the yard, i usually offer $2-$3, they always take it, and a lot of times offer me to haul of bigger stuff...especially if they're older folks who cant lift up junk thats been cluttering up for years... but with gas getting so high in price i may need to offer only a dollar , or only be able to come if there is more to me to take...

hey i recently found out that if you go to a good will bin like outside a dollar general that its public domain and you can take it only if its siting outside the bin and not in it. thats what a town cop said. thats great for me i got 4 tvs and some other things over a couple times. microwaves, air conditioners not so much anymore since people are pretty poor now and every1 knows its safe to take things outside the bin now that theres practicly nothing. cept tvs ocasionally.
