    2nd Dumpster

Well...no more shred trailer guys, finally moved on from that mess and had the Scrap Yard deliver me a 20 yard high sided on XMAS eve. I need that trailer more often than I don't on pickups and material transfers. I also took the chance to simply dump out what was in the trailer (No I didn't do all that in a day) and get rid of the side boxes off my old truck after 8 years of sitting. I also tossed an old shredder with an all metal cabinet that must have weighed more than I do because it had me by the sweatshirt as I tipped it into the dumpster and tried to take me with it.

The biggest downside was the ruts he left at the shop because the frost is long gone and it's very wet. I did my best to keep it from getting bad, looks like I will have a load of gravel brought out tomorrow if I can so we can smooth everything out before it freezes again. I should have figured as the last truck to come here and turn around loaded got stuck on the lawn...even when I told him to drive up to the concrete pad and wait for one of us. I expect at 20 yards the dumpster to net 9 tons every load. I needed this guys, every week wasting 8 or more hours of my time waiting in line, waiting to back up to the pile, unloading, scaling, waiting in line some more, getting a screwed up check more often than not...

    New years resolution came early.

Oh the first dumpster is for trash if you were wondering.

Me too, it's going to be a godsend just don't tell the scrap yard, they're offering same price as scale.

Wow how many pounds does that monster hold and do you fill it full? And also how much does the yard charge/deduct for one of those

It looks like it will hold 9-10 tons...I thought less but so far as my yard tickets and trailer size have to say this thing will hold AT LEAST 9 tons. Yard is charging nothing to have it out here, and it ends up saving me in time and fuel. This actually isn't my regular yard at all that owns this dumpster, I had a look around at the various businesses to make a decision about providers.

keep in mind this dumpster has a larger footprint than a dually crew cab truck and is around 8 feet tall so think about that before having one brought out to your residence My next dumpster might be a 40 yard tall.

I have been getting a tall 30 yard for the last 2-1/2 years.

I used to haul to the scrap yard with my truck and trailer (80 mile round trip).

The roll off bin is a lot easier option-I just hate the price they give me now (120/m/t).

My only saving grace is being located 3 miles from this particular yard. I'd go to this yard directly but it's a mess, I got a flat last time I was there and well...the wait was ridiculous.

I wish I was 3 miles from the yard.

I'd get $30.00 more per ton if I brought the stuff over the scale myself

Well I figure it out like this every hour I spend getting rid of shred plus fuel plus wear and tear on my truck...I cannot find a better deal. The reality is it costs me 40-70 dollars depending on the day and wait time just to go to the scrap yard.

    2nd Dumpster

I'm a much smaller guy, and I've come to the conclusion that loading up steel, packing the load tight, and the round trip is a waste of money. my yard is only a mile away with no lines. but not worth it for a few hundred pounds. Plus I don't have a dedicated scrap vehicle, so I worry the family minivan will get damaged earlier. one of my growth decisions for the next year is to find a trustworthy scrapper to take my steel and pay half. I only generate arround 400 pounds/month, and have my basement/ garage. I feel the right call for me. I really like this thread, makes me feel better about my decision. you've reached the same conclusion, but found a different solution for your situation.

I stand corrected, my dumpster is a 30 yard tall, not a 20, my TRASH dumpster is a 20. Advance and WM...ohh I pulled fast one with their sales people, Advance told me a cardboard dumpster would be free, WM after hearing that offered to pay 4 cents a lb on a loaded dumpster, Advance after I emailed today sends me another email just a few minutes ago to the effect that they'd also pay 4 cents a lb and can deliver a dumpster tomorrow...I don't need a dumpster tomorrow, but hey. Guys, point is, make them work for it. I know there's more money by weight in cardboard than shred right now and I know with fuel prices being down shred should be paying more...but it is what it is.

I'm also realistic about a cardboard dumpster...it would take me ages to fill it, 90 days maybe more? A smaller more practical dumpster with a lid is also free, but then no company is willing to pay out on it. I think that is probably going to be what I do until I expand again.
