    Newbie at the scarp yard

Hey guys, sorry for the stupid question.....

Ok so I've started spending more time "picking" and "curbside shopping" lately and I'm finding a few things here and there.

My question is do you return to garage or shop and sort out what you have or just go right to the yard? I've honestly only ever sold copper wire at the yard so i'm unsure of the procedure. I don't want to piss anyone off with my ignorance. Can I just pull up with my truck full of mixed stuff like.. appliances, scrap steel, car rims, batteries ect, ect. Or is it better to take separate loads of wire, alum, steel ect.

Sorry i'm reading and learning a lot but still kind of nervous about heading over to the yard.

Any tips or advise would be greatly appreciated.

I would highly reccomend breaking items down to the bare materials , you will maximize your load by not selling your better metals as shred .

It depends - at least with me. If their electronics, I take em back to the shop for dismantling. When I do appliance pickup, it goes right to the yard.

As a courtesy to others you should have all your stuff sorted so you can feed the scale as they punch it in. And although many do it, breaking down stuff as your dumping your shred/steel is a bad idea as well and you would get an earful from me.

Now if you pick up a load and it doesn't need processing, by all means, go straight to the yard and collect $$ and be ready for the next call.

I cannot drive so I build up a truck and trailer full of scrap than take loads. Sort it out as much as you can, and they will most likely mix a bunch of it and show u what goes together. Research on forums how to breakdown and what to breakdown, if you'd like checkout the smf breakdown contest section theres useful stuff that could help. Good luck!

I consider myself a maximizer border. I,try to break stuff down as much as I can. But I have the space. You got to be flexible. What works for me may not work for you. Improvise, overcome, adapt. As we say in the corp.

Great advise guys thanks alot. I do have room to work with and time isn't an issue but I want to try and avoid loading, unloading and re loading the truck. But I guess I'll learn as I go.

I might go down to the yard next week and chat with the guy to see what they say. I'd hate to get an "ear full" from a vet LOL.

    Thanks again!!

about the most "breaking down" I did at the yard was snipping the 2 cords I missed.Oh yea, and when the dump trailer wouldn't come back down, It almost "broke down"
