was educating myself with some iscrap youtube vids, came across this one where the guy says it is a waste to scrap the things he presents.



things that I see many people here scrapping.

There could be many reasons for this video. First, Rockaway could want complete items because their profit margin is higher on those items. Second, this person only is basing this off of what they pay for material. $2-4/lb for hard drives boards is ok for a scrap yard, but most people here will get $9+. If one has the tools, experience, and a set system for each of these items, it is worth it to break them down. The only exception I would say is a laptop. I don't spend time taking the motherboard out of these things.

I agree 100% with everything he said. Obviously we handle 100s of PCs a week so we tear them down, but we do not tear down Laptops or HD. And NEVER cut wires off power supply.

We deal with very large amounts of equipment, so we teardown everything, except laptops. We take the boards off of HD's for sure and cut the wires off of power supplies. I get a premium price for the wire from power supplies and the test I did on removing HD boards the revenue/hr was way too good to pass up, but we deal with thousands of HD's.

Hey, iam small time but it's profitable for me to remove HD boards. I am learning that things I use to break down is not worth the time. I love wire. Easiest money I ever made.

I break it all down. I do this as a hobby, so I don't calculate a wage or the time it takes me to do stuff. I do it for fun and want to make the most money I can. But everyone is different and their time is worth a different amount. I think the yard is trying to maximize their profits though.

I third those Hobo. Time is money and if you do the math they'll find that out -hopefully sooner than later. But to each his own . Rockaway is very well run, they have a host of how- to and informational videos and a great website but prices on e-waste are way too low and I don't feel they are competitive. I can go my buyer to do much better even after taking out the shipping.

I like their vidios.but I find their prices lower than the yard I go to in Delaware, on most things.

I agree about cutting the wire off of power supplies. Insulated wire is about as easiest money one can come by scraping. A lesson I taught to a young couple just yesterday! The yard has four grades of insulated wire, lowest grade Xmas lights and unprocessed wire (attachments/connectors left on), this is $.27 a pound. Cut the connectors off and it can become #2 for $1.08 a pound.

resourceful recycling is literally going thru several gaylords of power supplies every couple of weeks. any extra he would profit from cutting wire would be negated by the labor cost of employees taking time to cut as well as the reduced overall price of unit with no wires. with the shear volume he does we can only assume he gets a few more cents per pound. in his case it makes sense not to cut them.
