It's about the time needed to work .
For me - this year and going strong I have the Trash job . The Job and Scrap was fine as long as high scrap pricing
so I could scrap as usual
But now with scrap down and less time to find - It's hard for me to keep up needed volume .
But no question there is more out there I keep filling the truck.
But now I notice if a piece of metal is to hard to get at I leave it behind as the reality is the value might be $1
In the past like the saying of the soldier's No man gets left behind was my motto of the past . Now it's Hmm

Last month injury to my hand.
Last week my back goes on me. I've had 3 compressed disc for over 20 years. Progressively getting worse.
Price plummets!
And this freaking weather.
Upside is all the above has got the creative juices stirring.
Iam doing more research on here and elsewhere, and I am finding new ways to maximize my profits.
I don't give up,its not my nature. I like hands on action. But my doctor is saying, those days for you are over .I have physically pushed myself all my life, that's what drives me.
But now I need to do things differently.
Always look on the brite side.

Delegating has never been my strong point.
I always rather do it myself, especially if safety is a real issue.
But yeah time to exercise the head muscle.
And it is already working out.
I agree, there is definitely less competition. I mainly deal with ewaste, there used to be several ads on the local CL looking for scrap computers, etc. Now I hardly see any besides my own ad. I pay less too, so the margins are still more or less the same. Most of my larger regular customers understand that the market has gone down, so they are OK with the lower prices.
Also when selling scrap I shop around a bit too, to get the best price. I also accumulate enough of one type of commodity, so I can have a bit of negotiating power when selling. For example I can get a better price on wire if I take 1,000 lbs to the yard, rather than 100 lbs.
And last, I focus a bit more on re-sale items, the highest value items I fully test and sell, the lower value items I sell as untested, for lower price, but still more than scrap value. This is a time invested vs. return decision. Also having a local buyer for untested laptops, LCD monitors, etc helps.
I have been in this business for 3-4 years, 2014 was by far my best year, and so far 2015 looks just as good. I keep very detailed records, so I know where I stand.

Yeah, thanks to a lot of the members on here that encouraged me,I doing more resale for reuse. Some things are not possible due to not having equipment for testing, nor the expertise to use said equipment. But ,maybe in the future.

I can't recall if you do e-waste or not, or how much if you do, but it sounds like now would be a great time to look at setting up a testing station (old monitor, tower, keyboard and mouse) so you can just plug and play test stuff you come across if it's worth more than scrap. I have seen others post about it and have wanted to set one up for a while. I don't have the space though and still have to clean up my garage to make room for a bench grinder/chop saw (both found at Curbco for the right price) bench that I just made at work this week. I like ewaste the best , but I like quick returns so I'll always deal in all aspects of scrapping/ recycling. Until recently I never paid for scrap. I have a 10 by 20 storage unit that is slap full of free product, minus my gas and labor. My shop is actually an apartment basement ,two bedroom, I got tired of renters and now use it for my shop. Its full. I got three out buildings, small on 12 by 12 ,largest is 12 by 24. All three are full. Its time to get busy, but my body is on stand-by. Fortunately my youngest son just moved back home and is helping me out. Nothing like free labour. But he's showed an interest in the business and its giving me a whole new outlook on how far I can go with this recycling business. And its great having him around!!

Sounds like you're more than halfway there already! I mentioned e-waste too because it generally weighs less than some of the metal recycling and appliance items. That's why I like it so much, less lifting and more space.
Except for those big copiers. Lol
