Why my Children appreciate Scrap Metal...

Let's face it- Working with scrap metal can be addicting.

To me, recycling (scrapping) is one of the best things I have ever took the time to learn in my life. While I don't consider it a formal education, it's probably more valuable to me than 95% of other things I have been taught. Why you ask? I will never be broke and my kids will never starve.

I'm married with a wife and two kids. I make an above average income at my day job, and my wife stays home with the kids and does the best she can to raise them right. My three year old knows the difference between gold tipped RAM, silver tipped RAM, and know's that his Monsters University fridge magnet will not stick to aluminum.

My wife and I both want nice things. It's natural to always want to have better things than you can afford through the career or profession you have chosen. We would not have these things if it were not for shiny objects and long nights sorting Sometimes I will have friends and family come over and comment on the vast amount of "Junk" i store in my garage. It's not embarrassing for me, because not everyone understands this business. Even experienced scrappers always have something to learn, and I firmly believe that is the fun part of it.

The point I'm trying to make is this. Be thankful. Be thankful that you were intelligent enough that you saw the potential in this business, or be thankful to the person that took you under they're wing. I love reading this forum because I learn so much on a daily basis. It's truly a blessing to learn from you dirty scrappers (just kidding) on a daily basis.

Good for you and good you recognize your p.e and provide for you and your family is the greatest gift. If you or others are interested in a program that has worked and is simple to follow check out Dave Ramsey.

For those who are interested google him, he has free pod casts of his radio show on his web site. I suggest you listen to them if you want to enjoy your life with a plan for your money.

Thanks for sharing your story, Mike

Yep scrapping saved me and my family from going broke. I honestly started here (after watching a few Jack the Scrapper videos), lurked for months just taking in all the info and eventually joined so I could ask specific questions. Now I feel like I have a second family; my wife has accepted my collections and piles now but still gives me a weird look when I mention "Oh I read this on SMF" or "I just learned that from SMF".

I am in basically the same scenario, I make an above average income myself. That is why all of the money I make from scrap goes into buying gold and silver. For me the purchases are a storage of wealth. If we start getting into some serious inflation due to this mounting government debt, I will still be partially protected with my investment. And I only purchase physical gold and silver, I do not mess with the ETF's. And on top of that it helps to keep me busy outside of my main job, and I do not polish the couch with my butt so much.

LOL, yeah my girlfriend gives me weird looks when I go out to process some appliances when the temperature is in the mid 30's, or if it is raining (I have a four stall carport to keep the weather off of me). I just prefer to be outside rather than inside.

My only problem is that it almost feels like an addiction to have to process what I have. I love to team rope, and I find myself being pulled to process appliances rather than go to the practice pen. I am trying to get back to having a higher priority of working with my horses and hitting the practice pen, and processing the scrap during my spare time. It seems lately that the processing has taken priority and everything else is a lower priority. I have to get in the mindset that the scrap with be there for me to process, I will not always have good weather for my other endeavors.

Very touching and inspiring stories guys. I can't thank this forum enough as I started in very similar ways to you guys. This forum lured me in by accident and I lurked for several months before joining. Due to the collaborative effort and knowledge you all put together, I learned enough to open my own business. Without all of your blood, sweat and tears (and plenty of my own), I felt confident to open doors as a full-time electronics recycling and refurbishing facility. I cannot express my thanks and gratitude for everyone here on this forum, from the newbies energetic thirst for knowledge to the wisdom of senior members who have pioneered unbeaten trails. While my company is new and still has many obstacles in my path, there would be no EWR inc. without you all. Once more thank you to each and every member from every stretch of the globe.

Keeping our priorities straight is a life long endeavor. Lol

Part of your success, and think you'll agree, is your willingness to utilize the enormous wealth of information in the archives.
And I'll bet you still do!

Not a day or two goes by that I don't peruse the archives. There is always still more to learn. That's the best advice I can give about the forum. Just like gold mining, there are nuggets of valuable information everywhere on here that need just a bit of patient searching to find.

Lucky children. They will put that to use and its a lot more effective parenting to show them how to make money than just giving them money... You will always understand them cluttering you garage with "junk".

Good grief Devin. Put your feet back on the ground.
Now you know how to raise children at the ripe old age of 15.
