    Nothing to Brag About

Was in town on other business today and went by an auto body shop where I routinely pick up their scrap. I brought the donuts and they provided the coffee on break.

Took the load of 1700 lbs to the scrapyard about 6 blocks away. Mostly hoods, panels etc but included one front clip of a car and some paint cans. Prices have dropped again to $70 for prepared (short) iron, $50 for long iron and $10......yes TEN DOLLARS per net ton for car bodies. My load should have gone as shred (car bodies) but they gave me the $50 value. Total load was $42.50 and my share was half of that. VIP bonus was $12.75. My bonus is $5 per ton more than they're paying for a ton of shred. There was another guy in there with a small jag on his pickup. It must have only been 120 lbs as his check was for 60 cents. He weighed across the truck scale. He got .005 cents per lb. ($10/ton).

    Here was my load.

I took in 1700lbs of shred last week and got $103 for the load. I knew what to expect but its still not making me happy. Shred/steel is not my primary business in recycling but its more of a chore at times. With current prices shred for me is just to get it out of my yard .

We all got so used to doing this kinda work that we just do it .Yunkman's load is a nice load the type that put a smile on our face to the drive to yard .

Now Yunkman You say your total load was $42.50 and my share was half of that.
That must mean you have to pay 50% to auto shop ?? . If that be the case you need explain to them what is going on
you can't pay half as even $21.25 you could find in metal with less work..
During these times we are offering the favor . The auto shop needs the service , & the moneys not there any more
    .I'm still in shock .

At these prices for steel iam charging to remove it. 50/50 won't cover my gas. I hate doing it and pi$$ing people off. But don't make since to pick metal take it to the yard and come away with a negative $ value.
I give everyone that thinks iam try to "pull one over" on them the #'s of all the yards I deal with and encourage them to check the prices themselves.
I have room to store non ferrous but not steel. Wish I did because it's a buyers market.
I give them the # of another scrapper that's really hurting money wise and it seems to be working out for him. Probably cutting my throat but everyone is content for now.

I'll still offer free pickup and continue to build my contacts. Prices won't deter me i just be breaking stuff down more for more expensive metals. Ride it out!

    Thanks Copper Head,
I know.....nice guys finish last, but these guys are my friends and I park my equipment on their lot at times so I look at it as a favor returned. (He also gave me a $30 load binder and some pallets that day). I was 50 miles from home at the time and didn't go there just for that load. I've always done business on a 50/50 basis with all customers. When (IF) this thing turns around, they'll still be there for me. I got $21.25 plus $12.75 bonus which I kept so $34.00 for 15 minutes work and a 6 block drive was well worth it for me. Two guys helped load it by hand and the mag unloaded it at the yard, the secretary smiled at me (girl...lol) and I got to share my donuts with a stranger in the office on top of it. (Made a friend). The $34.00 paid for the gas for my 100 mile trip that day which purpose was delivering alfalfa hay to a local dairy. $680.00 for the hay kinda took the sting out of things. I know..........I'm too nice. Alot of people tell me that but maybe there will be a reward for that too someday. Just another viewpoint I guess. Appreciate your input.

That's I'm more so leaning towards resale N ewaste. it's not worth it for me to do steel unless there's a great amount.

Times like these I draw from every experience I've ever had.
Things get in the way. Weather,it affects both the scrap and painting biz.
Being less than 100% physically is a major factor. But iam make smart choices and progress. Think this price thing might rearrange the how and what I do for the better.
Take care of your backs young guys, for you old farts like me its too late if you didn't listen to the old farts when we was young. Like me. Lol

I've never been one to be cut throat . 50/50 60/40 70/30 I enjoyed sharing the moneys
For sure Yunkman barter is money.
I try to research , look at current events & I don't see the typical winter to spring up's and downs of price's . This is some thing different like a price correction to reality. I think if the oil industry is successful to boost prices we will see some improvement .But we have a mountain to climb to get back to that top. I think spring will bring back some higher pricing possibly equal to the typical % season to season climb but the increase could be based on a new lower price we seem to have now.
Who knows , Monday motors were .12 now today .15
I think we may finally discover the power of us scrappers
we probably will naturally slow down and the yards may have to up the pay and except a smaller profit . It might be a buyers market but you need product have that be the case.

And then did you all read the news today about OPEC trying to kill the competition by reducing crude oil again. It's $50/bbl right now and could go as low as $20 or even $10. Saudi Arabia said they could last for at least 2 years at those prices. If iron prices follow oil prices like I've been reading (someone must have done the research), then we're in for a drought. That grain bin I'm dismantling is light and hard to load and haul (I knew that). I only had 1.33 ton on today and got a whopping $66.50. I get half. I had made the committment long before the price went down so I feel obligated to finish the job. This particular bin is heavier guage steel and I can't bend it and fold it with my skidsteer like I prefer so there's alot of torching. There's 3 generations of old iron on that same farm and maybe if the price goes up someday and if they maybe want to get rid of it, I may be interested. Maybe !!!

I am in the same boat as the grain bin job. Have quite a few scrap jobs lined up before prices tanked... some pay, most don't.
But I said "It will be done, no problem" So that's it I'm their whether the money is or not.
*sigh* Me and my big mouth
at least that Al camper will still bring a little money and luckily someone already took the subframe....live and learn
