Ferrous piles at my yard are the lowest I've ever seen

Went to the scrap yard yesterday, it was like a ghost town. Almost nobody was there and the piles of ferrous were at the lowest I've ever seen! Usually you can see it overflowing past the gate and it was nowhere near that yesterday. Light iron is at 5 cents a lb here and heavy iron is 8 cents a lb.

Where is "here"? No location is listed in your profile.

    Is this a feeder yard?

A shredder yard with small ferrous scrap piles is on the way to being a goner.

Both of my yards that I sell iron to are small, independent feeder yards. Same thing- The usually-massive piles of iron and shred are GONE. It looks quite strange. I'm friends with both owners. Both have said they do not think the market is done falling, and they don't want to get burned sitting on large inventories of ferrous. I can't blame them. There's less coming in with the lower prices, but these guys are filling a container and OUT it goes.

Same here (NW Wyoming). Whatever there is, it's going out.

Prices are at $30/Ton, currently. They'll likely go down to $20/Ton, soon.

PSC metals in Nashville I guess is what you called a shredder yard and it's almost as empty and clean as it was around 2008.

How can people survive on 20 dollars a ton? Thats 1 cent per pound... What the heck? My yard is still at 8 last time I check, they may be down to 7, but they never go down really really low.

Lets just say that they're doing really slowly. If I haul to Pacific in Billings (The big yard), it's $45 a ton there.

I've been throwing mine in a pile. I would literally lose money to haul shred.

At $20 a ton you want to break down everything and don't go looking for scrap...

Im in Brooklyn NY, near Coney Island. Not sure what constitutes a shredder yard, they have some sort of machine that they use to shred clean ferrous scrap into what the owner told me was called No. 2 shredded scrap, and any appliances or things with too much contamination(Chairs with wood seats, unstripped microwaves, low grade electronics and printers etc) go in another pile and they sell it like that without any further processing. They then load up it all up into a semi truck and bring it to somewhere in Jersey if I'm correct.

I can't really break down computer cases.

But, I'm not looking for scrap metal. I'll still do my collection events in the spring, but the cases won't be making me anything.

At the small yard I sell to it looked like they were ready to break out the leaf rakes. Almost no steel in the yard and as of last week still paying $0.06/lb.

I am assuming that the small yards don't want to get caught holding a large inventory in case the price continues to drop. Mike

I went to the yard just to get some gas money yesterday and I did a triple take on one of the two shred piles. It was almost all snow! I mean literally 3/4 snow with small items mixed in!

I have typed this a lot know with all these bleak posts but I am loving this time because everyone is passing things up and making me money as I am still getting 6-8cents a # after shipping cost but look around and do your research and work with other scrappers because I work with others and people who are much better at logistics that me but if your near a rail loading area which can be as simple as a maintance platform look into shipping by rail we are sending out 70-90 tons at a time and are not splitting anything but shipping costs and I still do the same as a yard I pull up and weigh, dump and its loaded into a gondola and sent to a much larger yard I wish to visit one day not saying who because our prices are based on this volume.
cashing in while I can because this amount of stuff being left will end soon enough as prices will eventually rise.

I commute to Williamsport PA (Little League World Series) every day for school and I pass by a decently sized yard up there on the highway going to my school, they're piles are pretty big. They have enormous amount of scrap that they're holding on. I'm pretty sure this isn't a feeder yard because they have a huge operation going.

Yes- I work in Cody. It's on the highway East of Yellowstone. It's a great area, but I'm glad that I don't live in town. Cody's becoming "Jackson North".

But, the area is very beautiful. The dam you're thinking of is the Buffalo Bill dam- it's about 5-10 miles west of town, between Cody and Wapiti.

Everything is low here, so our scrap prices will always be lower than the ones back east. Cost of living is less, though, so it evens out.

Small price to pay for living here, if you ask me!
