No, I have not stopped but I have told my son and his friend that scrap for me on their end on my big route day to bypass small steel items. For instance, don't waste the gas stopping for a 1 lb steel item. Its not worth the gas for them to stop for that item and then to drive it out to me another day and for me to then drive it to work to drop off. That really doesn't amount to many passed up items but when I'm paying to scrap on two ends that day I have to weigh the cost of gas against the item.
However, I do feel like telling folks who scrap hot water tanks at my work who complain about how little they get for them to just leave them out for me - that 4 bucks will cover my gas for that route and the brass on it is money in the pocket lol.

Still doing it but on a smaller scale. Focusing on everything but shred. It has just been too cold here in NE Ohio and too much snow. Treelawns are packed 2 feet high with snow and ice and people are not putting things out for garbage pickup. That should change soon though. Shred is at 6 cents a pound here.

So I've been thinking about it. I may start scrapping again. I may go out tomorrow and see if there is anything out with the start of spring. I plan on going to a different scrap yard Friday mornings that's close to my school during my off period and get rid of shred as fast as I can. I don't know. I miss scrapping. If I can get a truck load easy and quickly, thats an easy $30-$40 and I would be spending less gas. I'm going to have to think about it.

I was discussing that same issue with hubby last week, about the snow. there just isn't room to put out regular garbage let alone scrap and on my way to work I see folks putting stuff out before they leave and they are half pulled out of their drives.Originally Posted by ScrappyRob

Was talking to a kid yesterday that works full time scrapping/car hauling with their family. They said the west coast port shutdown stopped exports of scrap off the west coast and now ports are opened back up and they are shipping again this might have caused a shortage in the supply chain. Went to the yard today 3 cents shred since I had to move some appliances and don't have space.

Not me. There hasn't been much on the curbs lately cause of the weather anyway, but I picked up some stuff from construction sites the other day and I'm in the process of clearing some junk from a grocery store including an almost 7 foot long freezer.
Still a non-stop stream of scrap coming by me but it's starting to pile up. Both local feeder yards have shut down due to low shred price. So at this point not able to sell ferrous or non-ferrous.

In looking thru some numbers steel brings in 78% of the weight I've scrapped and 38% of the cash over the years. So If I am going to keep doing this I just can't bypass the steel. Also when breaking down stuff you always get some more steel.

Went to the yard twice this week mostly appliances. I had some room on back of truck so found this old wok stove sitting in front of a Chinese restaurant. Mostly iron some S/S and brass pipe. I figured they wanted it hauled off so talked to the owner and it's for sale $400! I know restaurant stuff goes for top dollar but not seeing $400 on it.

Just sold 740 Lbs today at $4.50 a hundred. Pile looks pretty slim. I'm trying to get back into scrapping again while nobody else is out and we had our first nice dry and warm Saturday in a month, so spring cleaning should be in full affect.

Almost stopped this winter as the winter got me. (too cold-too much snow) I did work on smaller stuff (indoors) that had been setting around. A lot of the boring and tedious work I got caught up on. Now that the weather is breaking I can start cleaning up and consolidating the garage so there's room for my next "whale".

I had various health problems for most of the winter and prices were too low for the amount of snow on the ground, but I eventually filled my storage space. That was time to haul shred in for whatever price I can get (4 cents a pound).
