    Scrapping in bensonhurst(pics)

Went today to an asian grocery store that had some scrap for me, shelving, electrical conduit pipes, and a 7 foot long freezer! The freezer had broken about 6 or 7 times already and the owner decided to just get a new one. I went at it with my new portable sawzall, it was actually easier then I thought it would be, took me about 5 hours or so and I might have been able to do it quicker if I had more room to work on it in. To my surprise the whole frame except for the sides was aliminum! It's full of styrofoam insulation that's pretty well stuck on, I tried to pull the aluminum off and it ends up tearing into small pieces, gonna try to clean it with a hatchet tomorrow as best as I can since dirty aluminum here is only paying .10 a lb while clean sheet is going for .50 and the door frames are aluminum as well. It yielded a nice amount of 1# insulated(shopping bag full) and copper, a few motors and and extremely heavy compressor, little bit of stainless trim too. The best part was probably the 2 copper aluminum radiators, one longer then my arm! The other one from the bottom was smaller but probably just as heavy!

Then I went over to a pizzeria that said they had a water heater for me. I went to the place and the guy wasn't very friendly at all, he asked if I had help and I said no, I'm alone. And he was like "oh well then you'll have to come back later so one of my guys can help you" so I said "Ok, around what time?" And he was like "I don't know, it's too heavy you won't be able to do it alone" so I told him "well I only have the truck today and half of tomorrow so just let me try, where is it?" He said "the basement" and one of his employees said to him "why'd you call him to take it if you don't think he'll be able to do it? Might as well let him try" and he looked at me and I said "Let me try, I'll find a way to get it out" so he said "Fine but I assure you, you won't be able to" I down to the basement and it was just a regular water heat, still had the brass attachments. And some of the copper, about a lb of copper maybe. I dragged it to the stairs and he was like "see? Too heavy" and I said "not that heavy, 120 or so probably" and he was like "too heavy, might as well forget about it but try all you want" dismissively and went back inside. I tried pushing it up the steps, but the steps were narrow and high so it kept getting stuck. I didn't want to leave it behind and wanted to prove to him that I when I say I'll do something, indeed I'll do it one way or another. All I needed was someone to lift the heater up a little so it wouldn't hit the steps when I pushed up, so I scanned who was on the street at the time for someone who was likely to help, I spotted a guy hanging around who sorta looked like he had a habit(if you know what I mean) and I told him "I'll give you a few dollars if help me get this water heater out of that basement" the guy was like "OK! Sure!!" Very enthusiastically. When the heater was out of the basement the owner of the pizzeria came out eyes widened, said "You did it?!" And I said "Yes I did, I told you I'd find a way." And he was like "Hmm, good job". Later my grandmother went inside to get a slice and mentioned she was the grandmother of the boy who took the water heater and the guy was all with his tail between his legs, lol. After that I loaded up the tin siding and #1 iron I got from a construction site the other day, and found a small metal lamp and office chair on the street. Everything's all loaded up to bring in tomorrow and I'm excited to see how much I get!

I did a food cooler that you could set metal pans of food down into. It was mostly SS with some shred framework. Needless to say I took it apart for the "clean SS".

Good job to you, well deserved.

Any price he paid for the help, to prove to the guy that he could do it is well worth it I feel!

There's a pic of the freezer with one side cut off and doors removed to get an idea of just how big it was.

I paid the guy $5, true it didn't leave much room for profit but it came with the copper and brass still attached and the copper pieces were pretty heavy for their size.
