    Still as much as I've reduced coated wire to just CU or AL , The planer is an excellent idea , little depth gage adjustment and it's the best idea yet , heck you know how many doors I planed in my life & your idea never occurred to me .

    Abuilder Fine Idea , hats off to you . I don't think it's over kill at all . Heck a low cost Harbor freight Planer will do fine .
    the only draw back is keeping mess down as wood chips are biodegradable and casing chips are not .



    As to steel core - once stripped cut at lengths of 2 or 3 foot then it's easy enough to untwist
    I guess you could cut them at 2 or 3 foot first then watch your hands careful as you use planer on the workable sizes
