So in my area the recycling center offer about 1.55-1.60 a pound for cans. But about 40 min north, scrap yards offer 1.90 a pound. I am going to start bringing my cans up north now. What do you guys get for cans?

Yesterday was paid $2.21 for CRV Alum. cans, the lowest price since I have tracked my prices (2012) was $2.09. I'm probably 40 minutes north of you (Chino). I do have a company account at my yard and sell other metals (aluminum, brass and copper) almost every week. So they may be tossing in a "bone" for this dog, my brother (lives next door) as learned it was better for me to sell his cans for him. I think you should perhaps want to save more and drive north for a better return.

You Cali guys, isn't the minimum the CRV goes is $1.55?? I've always figured its takes about 30-32 cans to make a pound (about half an ounce each) so 31 @.05 CRV is $1.55. Good for you if you guys can get some sort of price bidding among companies out there. Must be things going on beneath the surface to make companies go higher (the state pays the redemption companies and then they basically have no money into the cans besides what it costs to maintain their business and labor?).
I don't think there's a way really to compare your situation with the straight spot price on non-subsided Al cans with companies in states that don't do it. My non-ferrous pays 60 cents a pound and has for a while. That's pretty good I think for a non-redemption state...

Almost every traded metal and even non-metals (oil) has had significant decrease in prices in the last one year period. Silver more than 20%, Nickel 25% and Tantalum 30% (oil 50%). We have all seen this with both scrap metal and E-waste, with some slight improvement with Copper scrap prices (still down 8% from April 2014).
All except Aluminum, almost no change in prices on the spot market and the scrap yards. Here in California even a slight increase in Aluminum scrap prices. Especially true with the CRV cans, maybe it's that there's a guaranteed "built in" price with the states CRV fund. Don't know why (not that smart or have the info to answer that), but the price of CRV is up (for me) by $.07 from this time last year.

Is it true that in California, cans are really hard to find with the high payout and all the competition? It seems incredible to get that kind of money, but if they're nowhere to be found, then not so great.

29.1 per lb. $1.59 per lb. according to there website.
And I feel that if you live in California you should get the CRV deposit ($.05 less than 24 oz. or $.10 24 oz. or larger ) and money for the aluminum. SO the rate of $2.21 is $1.59 deposit and $.62 for the aluminum.
