Everything I scrap is from telephone systems and data equipment. I don't take CRT's unless I can get a fair amount of PC's also. I've got one guy trying to give me 2 pallets of monitors and a few printers but I just smile and say nope.
I took a load of empty PC cases to the yard today and I couldn't believe what people were throwing away. Right there at the edge of the scrap pile were two huge cast aluminum grills. DA's!!
I unloaded and threw 1300 pounds of metal right on top of the grills covering them completely. I figured this would keep other scrappers honest.

No CRT's for the reasons everyone else states, but I will do coffeemakers: usually there's a small board in there and the heating element is often cast AL. My yard will not take that shiny (#5?) plastic, which a lot of vacuums have. I take the vacuums and will strip down motor to copper wire if I can't sell a working motor on Ebay.

We don't make it a habit to refuse anything. Our marketing is based on saving the environment and saving space in our dwindling landfill space (it's a huge problem here and the government hardly recycles anything). So by refusing, we are contradicting ourselves and would turn off customers. Luckily we have a free CRT drop-off for processed CRTs once we are done with them. A big issue with us is plastic. We get a lot of it in fans and the like. We're trying to find a responsible place to send it (even if you have to recycle these things at a loss, claiming you are zero landfill is a big plus).

Also, we pick up fridges and air conditioners and microwaves but we don't process them. We take them directly to the scrap yard.

Hey now! We are all essentially his ''competitors'' and just because I don't sell things online doesn't make me stupid! Wtf?

And no Im just tryimg to educate is all. It drives me nuts when I see 10 a/c units thrown in the shred pile or 20 pc's. Or a washer, that takes 30 sec to rip the front panel off. Then at least you could make $40 in switches if ya dont want to mess with the wire. And then I sit here looking a g in the shred like omg, I need that money \to pay my bills. And somebody tossed it off for 50 bucks. Just my pet peeve
I don't think we are all as dumb as you imply. What works for YOU doesn't mean it works for others. So don't imply you are so all knowing and perfect and the rest of us suck which you just did.

Also, the topic of the thread was ''what won't you pick up'' not, ''WHY won't you pick something up, tear it down and 500% maximize on said item like perfect little boys and girls.''

Machine Swarf if it comes pre-packed in 55 gal. drums I'll work it all the way to the scrap yard, but those contacts have to be cultivated, that doesn't happen in a dumpster or shopping at curb-co.

I take pretty much everything, as I own a full scale auto wrecking yard I've found a way to properly dispose of pretty much everything. Propane tanks, I use the propane for personal stuff and then shoot a couple holes in them from long range before torching them up. My yard will take oil barrels as long I cut a "man sized hole" in them and drain them, but I only take them if empty.

The only thing I really shy away from is campers and house trailers. To dispose of the construction debris properly is costly here (no burning - that stuff is just nasty), and for the little bit of aluminum sheeting, copper wire, and steel frame, I just cant really come out on them in the end if I figure in my time and fuel.
