First day scrapping! Howd I do?

So ive been planning on getting into scrap metal for a week or two now and came across this website. After reading a lot and soaking up a lot of info from this website I finally baught a truck last night and got my first truck load of metal. Was hoping you guys could let me know how I did and maybe whats worth what?

    What I got:
    Washer
    Dryer
    Bed frame
4 or 5 bikes frames with a few bike rims
A sink, its metal but not sure what metal it is.
    An outdoor fireplace
A weight bench for bench press
3 tires with rims (not sure what the rims are have to check)
I also have a bunch of stuff around my own yard that im guna see if my mom wants me to get rid of for her.

    Thanks

I'd say you did ok. The washer and dryer will be Light Iron. You might want to see if the drums are aluminum and take them out. Cut the cords off. Maybe the motors. Bed frame and bike frames are Light Iron. If the bikes are whole and straight, you might do better selling them on Craig's List. I sell/barter any bikes to a guy who repairs and sells them. Weight bench the same way. Check the rims to see if they're aluminum; otherwise, should go as #1 iron. They probably want the tires dismounted. Remove valve stem and attachments, if aluminum. The sink is likely aluminum or cast iron. If cast iron and porcelain, they may just give you Light Iron price for it. Check for any brass or stainless steel parts.

    Welcome to the Forum.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

    Welcome.

Check the outdoor fireplace. I found one once that had a copper cover, thing weighed nearly 30 lbs.

Put a magnet to the bike frames, as a small handful are aluminum. After you have had a couple, you will know them when you see them. Check washer tubs and dryer drums...get a stainless one once in awhile...same with the sink. If the sink still has the drains attatched, they are likely brass or stainless. Get a couple buckets & start saving wheel wieghts (lead) and valve stems (brass)

    .....

And the sink faucets have a strong possibility of comtaining brass and/or stainless.

In addition to cutting the power cord remove the wiring harness. Insulated copper is going for over $1 a pound around here. You can hoard it for a while and it does not take up much space, and when you have 30 or 40 pounds, take it in.

Ok so i went out with the magnet and 1 of the bikes frames are aluminum. So now i have to strip the bike down to just the aluminum right? The sink is also aluminum i believe.

Indeed, strip those babies down. The sink is likely stainless.....not saying they don't exist, but I've never seen an aluminum sink. A quick clue on sinks, dryer drums & washer tubs...the stainless ones won't be painted. Always stick a maget to bike frames...some of the aluminum ones will be painted, but most won't. Stick the faucets & drains too. If they are not sticky, put a file to them to see the color inside...shiny silver will be stailess, shiny gold will be brass. Like wayne1956 said, separate the little stuff into buckets & wait for a full bucket to take it in.

I took in the load today and got $46 for 480lbs of lite iron. I left the aluminum bike to strip and the fireplace cause I think it might be cast iron. Not sure though.

Not sure about your area, but I always save my bedframes with my steel pile. Steel here is $280 per tonne, and appliances and mixed tin are about $180
