New yard opened up!!

The only place that takes steel in my metro opened a state-of-the-art massive new yard a week or so back on the opposite side of the metro than the other (this one is only 3 miles from my place!!). I was going to get some pixs of it but the wifey must have the camera. If you have Google Earth and want to take a look, put in coordinates 43.589883 N and -96.656184 W. The current image is from this March when it hadn't opened yet. The yard measures almost 600 yards long, about 4 times the total size of their other place.

I got there about 8:45 this morning and was the only vehicle dropping stuff off. No intimidation like the old yard of driving my Buick up to the scrap piles. They had a couple of RR tanker cars that they were cutting up. Lots of space to do that, in the old yard a much harder thing to do. The guy told me this was 8 years in the making. Must have confidence to open it in a down steel market. Probably take another little load over there on Tues. morn and will try to get some pictures.

A yard that takes steel and is 3 miles from your house and you get to chum it up with the employees before a rebound makes it a madhouse? Very cool. I wish I had a yard 3 mikes from my house... I can't complain though...mines only 15 or so miles and I have a couple options. Depending on which direction I head.

MitH- Thanks for the idea but I'm waaaaay too small time for that. Besides, I value all my body parts and semi-domestic bliss. I'm more than happy that's its now just a 5 minute drive away with lots and lot of space

I called a couple weeks ago for prices and asked them if they were opening the new location. The gal said she didn't know when it was going to open. I will have to make a trip there and check it out. I have a little bit of shred(500-600lbs) that I need to get rid of. I thought about just calling another scrapper and having him pick it up so I don't waste my time hauling it to the west location. Now, I might as well take it in to get a couple bucks. Guys, the new location should be organized in a large loop so scrappers don't have to pull in and back up to the designated piles like we did at the former location. I always dreaded going to the former location as it was a small area and a mess to get in and out. I'm not going to start collecting shred still for a while until prices go back up, or if ever. I am working on copper right now and I should be getting another load of insulated wire soon. Rog, send me a pm sometime and let me know how the new yard is. I won't get there for a couple weeks.

M, I don't know if a pm is needed, not much else to say than its GREAT!! I emptied out my steel bin this morning for another small load and got there about 8:30. Again, the only vehicle there. Nice looking young gal (daughter of one of the owners or managers??) came out to the car to have me sign a libility waiver about potential damage to my ride such as flat tires. I don't remember ever getting something like that at the old place probably because it was just too chaotic most times. Long run (over a quarter mile) down to the pile. And that's about it!!

Shred prices(they call it "tin" here) went up a good percentage between Sat. and today but still nothing to get excited about (from $40 to $55 a ton). Their non-ferrous prices (they don't put their pirces on their web-site) are about a nickel more in most categories than my non-ferrous guy, 3 cents more on alum breakage. I have some left overs from a small pu topper and other dirty alum that I'll probably take over next with a little #2 copper. Get to check out the inside of their big building then...

P.S. Was going to take some pixs this morning as I found our camera but the one kid ran the battery out. Maybe next time.

What is the limited liability just flat tires? What if the steel pile shifts and crushes you and your truck?
