I have a bunch of motherboards and cards from maybe 30 computers. The day in this scrappers life is that I want to clean up space and I need to decide whether tho shred or separate. Is that small amount of e-waste worth the trouble or should I just dump in the shred pile?
It is unlikely I will separate more so than cards and motherboards.

simple math from one of our buyers threads shows you that .05/lb is just silly.....motherboards $1.50-2.50/lb and finger cards are $3-4/lb...not including the ram and CPU's. In FACT many will prepay shipping for you (comes out to .30-.40/lb in general)...so yeah...send it off and get your money

Thanks guys. I had no idea. I figured it was a few dollars difference. I have just been piling it up and had no idea what it was worth. I will contact the buyers and let ya'll know the outcome.

At the very least, pull the motherboards, hard drives, and RAM. You'll make good money compared to shred.

30 x lets say, small socket MB, is only about $55.00. Where does the other $ 145.00 come into play? No way 30 x ram + finger cards plus steel = couple hundred bucks.

They could be worth more if they are older computers. Last year I scrapped about 25 old PC's. Each one had a large socket mother board with 386 and 486 processors, 3 to 4 gold finger cards, 2 sticks of ram and a lot of aluminum. Oh and one had a Pentium Pro in it. You never know.

Well, might be a touch high but a certain percentage of them should be the better mother boards. 30 CPU's at varying prices, at least 30 sticks of ram. Floppy drives + CD drives +hard drives all have boards. Might be a couple with 2 old hard drives. Computer wire, Fans, SS or brass motherboard stand-off's, The SS plate on the back of the case. Then at least 10 lb of shred per empty carcass

The innards will determine the difference. Back when prices were better out here (Probably around what you have now in most areas- our prices are always lower), I hauled this load in:
That was all cases, and it yielded $56. You'll get something for the cases, but that isn't where you'll make the money. For 30 machines, you'll have around 3# of RAM if each machine has two sticks. That's about $30-40 there.
More than scrap value parts may do better, but without knowing what the systems are, we won't know what that avenue might bring.
You'll make more breaking them down, but it won't be enough to cover the down payment on a second home. There is no way that I would throw them out, though.

Thank you. I prefer conversing with those here. Many times you find out things about others if you just talk with them and engage in a conversation. I could learn a lot more in a library, but I would much rather shoot the $hit with a dirty scrapper on a bar stool sharing a pitcher of beer.
To those who have offered other forms of advice, thank you also. Most of the towers have been stripped and the components have been separated. I still have about a dozen towers I have not broken down. That was the reason for the question and the thread. I wanted to know if it was worth the trouble to break the remaining towers down.

yep, they break down quickly once you do a few and the ROI is WAY WAY WAY better than any metal on the market (well most metals people will find)....don't forget to pull the CD/DVD boards and hard drive controller boards and keep those separate..payout is FAR better than sending in the drives with the boards attached.
Let us know the end result...that stuff always helpes someone in your shoes for the next time.
