Just curiously, where are you located? Because my local yard is paying .12 on motors no matter low or high grade and number 2 is 1.85 or 1.90 depending on weight. But there are transporters and order fillers I use to maximize my selling price. Such as .17 on motors and 2.15 on number 2 and up to 2.35 for bare bright but the prices are down right now around south Florida.

Mix is just random steel stuff thats fed to the shredder, its what most folks take in when they go to the yard with steel. Short iron is usually 1/4" or thicker and cut up into pieces 3' or shorter so it can be fed straight into a smelting furnace. Of course, depending on yard, YMMVOriginally Posted by Thecamokid

Here is some pricing on the South side of Chicago. Copper1 at $1.90, #1 Ins copper wire $1.20, Shred at 115/Ton, HMS at 140/Ton

I'm only turning in clean iron today (over 1000 lbs! Woohoo!) but I grabbed a price sheet: 2.50 BB, 2.20 #3, .0825 for clean iron, .06 for shred, .68 AL extrusion with paint.

I think what we are seeing is , Scrap yards are concerned - As I notice they are increasing profits over spot .
I suspect we have not seen the low yet .

You guys (I believe mostly from up north) seem to be doing pretty decent on your shred prices. It's $80 a ton here in south florida

Hearing that is disappointing - 1990's I got $80 to $90 for a 4000 # car
all things being equal for it was 25 years ago !!

I misread the steel yard's price sheet last Tues. because I thought they were paying .04 a pound for "tin". Cleaned out the end of my bro's shelterbelt Sat. morning and met reality at the same yard's older location, .02 apound for 1,600. Good news is that his yard looks nicer, no one got skewed like last year, and nothing fell of of the trailer. Still, a lot of work for 32 bucks.
Sort of got a last laugh though on the steel guys. My car trunk load last Tues. they wanted to pay me #2 steel price which I think was .045. I told the young gal at the counter (a manager's daughter or something at their nice new yard) that not what I brought in. She said, "Nope, they told me #2" so I took the eight bucks and change (this place is located only 5 minutes from my house) for 160+ pounds of light. That brought the total up to .023 a pound for 1,760. But it will be a while before I bring in any bigger load with a trailer. As far as I'm concerned, if I never see their crowded messed up west side place again, that will be fine with me!!
P.S. Devlin, you're an anomoly. I suspect your steel yard is shipping directly to the NuCor re-melt plant up in Norfolk to get you such a good shred price. Why else would you're metro Omaha yard be 3X more than a city a 180 miles away unless what you call "shreadables" includes some heavier types of steel???

It's hard to figure why such price disparity's . We have to ask is this the measurement of what is to be .
Have the prices of the South and the North always been .03 .04 lower or higher (depending on vantage point)
My take is since base metals are easy enough to find now is the time to clean house . The curb co scrapper is being pushed out . There was a time the lines went down the road at the yard with the most amazing assortment of scrap trucks & individuals ,we were a force at the time . The yards paid to get us & others in the door ,As we stopped and or slow down , prices drop for other reasons & the yards except there new profit margin .In the end the yards are catering to trucks that bring in tons. The metals are still there and more is available as the swarm of scrapper workers is not what was in the past.
Since they pay .04 I only pick up what I run into by chance . I had seen a 300# cast iron bath tub ( juicy find ) that in the past was $30 in value $8 fuel - and go back & get later .
Now it's simple math - $12 value $6 fuel ,
High chance the carting company got item not another curb co , hence the the big companies will get more .
Sadly I see copper is working it's way to half value of our heyday .
Gold is $1088 BYW
Yup our markets are volatile Once the scrap yards don't see stability , We feel the pinch
