What do you get for shred electronics?

I was quoted at a yard near me 0.01 for electronics in any shape, this includes keyboards and mice, is this a good price? What do you guys get?

Anything that I consider not worth my time to break down, goes to the county drop off for no pay.

I was breaking down VCR and DVD players for a while. Then found out those brown boards are only worth about 0.10 a pound. So, why bother? The big companies are better suited for breaking that stuff down.

I've just been stacking my keyboards for now. I do think I'll retrieve the silver mylar sheets from them at some point once there is a demand for Ag again.

.01 is good. I am getting .02 right now.

I get more off the wire an the mylar.

An the little balls in the mice make great slingshot ammo, an other nefarious deeds.

It's well more then .01lb.


An before someone says it...it doesn't take long to cut cords. It's fast an easy. Something you can do while waiting on dinner or sitting outside enjoying the weather, watching tv...easy work. Boring...but easy an far more profitable.

An of course you can resell keyboards an mice if their any good. Clickly keyboards, an older ones sell to folks trying to complete units. as always...profits an results may vary.

Just saying, there are ways to get MORE for same effort without contributing to the landfill...granted they MAY recycle the plastic at your yard, no idea of course.

Do they buy all electronic scrap (e waste) for $0.01 per pound? Do you know they are going to a shredder? I don't see how there could be any profit for you, me or anyone selling anything to a scrap metal yard for $0.01 a pound! I'll say it again, nothing is free, if you do nothing more than drive it to the scrap yard, with no other processing of this electronic scrap, you will still have invested some amount of time and transportation cost. I'm hard pressed to see how there could be any "wiggle" room for you, me or anyone to make any money in this scenario.

I would put my efforts in processing scrap that has better profit margin's for yourself. Even in this very down cycle of scrap prices, there is more opportunities to process items into "value added" categories and make a little profit. At the end of the day, it's all about putting money in your pocket. At $.01 a pound I think you can do better than that, if not do something else as there is a lot of trash out there, with more "meat on the bone", still!

.01-.02 per pound is about the best you will get for stuff like keyboards, mice and crappy consumer electronics stuff. I am getting .05 for business phones and .10 for docking stations, so if you find the right buyer you can do a little better.

With electronics recycling outfits that are doing it right, the stuff doesn't get landfilled. There's a big shredder at SRS (Sims Recycling Solutions) here in Roseville. It's used because it's not cost effective to break everything down by hand. Everything from printers, keyboards, some hard drives that are more difficult to dismantle, and more are sent through it. Everything's separated out in the end for proper recycling.
