not everyday I see one of these...

I check my local CL's "free stuff" everyday several times even though I have orders not to bring (much) scrap home until the rest is either put away or sold. Anyway, hasn't been much decent on recently or the stuff is good and goes really fast (someone gave away an awesome weight outfit earlier his week that probably retailed for over a grand new--someone just had to get it out of the basement [several trips involved]).

So, I was up pre-dawn to make a run out to a friend's old wooded farmstead turned into a residential abode to check some raccoon traps I have going (even though the prices are down or little reported takers I still like to do it for fun). Anyway, when I first wake up my check to see if anything has changed in my ebay ads over night and I checked CL. A guy was offering a SS industrial double coffee pot machine but the pixs didn't give a sense of scale. I shot him a line and went out the door. A couple hours later he had replied that he still had it and I said I was swinging through town around 0900 before work (was making a little non-ferrous run as my allowance was low this week) and as he was sort of on my way, I'd stop and check it out. I didn't ask if it was non-magnetic or magnetic.

When I showed up, I was surprised by the size of this thing, about a yard long, 2 1/2 feet tall, and 18 inches or more deep. "Its a heavy bugger too" he said. I looked at the back seat of the Buick and figured if I could get a dishwasher in there, this thing could go as well. We did get it in but no easy feat as it was heavy and unwieldy. And my magnet was happy because it didn't stick. Got to work later than I had planned and told the guard at the gate that I "needed more coffee". She smiled and waved me through. I wondered if anyone noticed this beast in the back-seat as they left work later today??

Tonight the older kid and me wrestled the thing out of the car and luckily no ripped seats. I went on ebay to check things out but can't find any model number on it but it was made by American Metalware. It sort of looks like this one but I think its an older model as the side control panel isn't there and never looks like there was one. It also appears that some pieces are missing so I don't think I'm going to sell it on-line and deal with finding a freight carrier. Its also not as good looking as this one (I took pixs but photobucket isn't uploading them for me tonight). So I think I'll go soft and try to piece out anything that I can handle and try to sell on ebay and scrap the rest. I suspect a good amount of weight in the bottom is the heating element(s) although I did see brass sticking out down there. I also don't have a 220 outlet besides the washer/dryer and I'm not hauling this thing inside to see if it turns on. I asked the guy where he got it and he said, "an auction". There's a company ownership metal tag in the side that indicates it came from a business located about 200+ miles from here.

Anyway I cut it, I was worth my little side trip to pick it up. Now I just wish the back would stop barking...

No, I wish that was my deal, that was just an example of what it looked like because I couldn't get photobucket to upload my pixs last night. It took a while but here are the actual pixs of the unit I have. Not as nice or new as the one in ebay. I think I'll try parting some of it out and scrapping the rest because of the issues mentioned in the first post.

any restaurant surplus companies in your area?
I cleaned out a restaurant store room a few years back and was able to sell a few items to a company they bought old rusty slicers and a few other broken pieces whole as parts machines.

check out the freight guy in the buyers section. he can probably give you an idea of what's involved in shipping something like that

If you take apart the SS if non mag would go as unprepared SS due to size and that would be a bit of work to get skin off

This is just my opinion after working in food service for half my life:

There won't be much interest in this at all. Many restaurants have a free coffee maker provided by their coffee supplier. Even if it wasn't free, it is very desirable to have a newer style maker that is hooked to a water line. These also aren't very big. This percolator style maker's most likely use would be for off-site catering or buffet set-up...and again this thing is big and not easily moved around. If it only works off of 220 like you said, then that restricts where it can be used as well.

Like I said, just my opinion. If I had it, I'd scrap it. If it was complete, I'd see if a church or AA group or something would want it.

I started parting it out last night and found a good amount of corrosion around some of the components so yeah, good thing I didn't try to sell it. So mostly for scrap and maybe some parts sold for more. Still glad I went and got it, an interesting piece.

Maybe next time I'll find a newer and in better shape one. Thanks for all the great comments!!!

UPDATE: I had a bit of an adventure taking the old industrial 10 gallon coffee brewer apart. I knew there had to be something in the middle underneath the big vats and inside where the main electrical components were located on the bottom. Finally got one of the vats out and looked in to see about 8 "snakes" in a big oval. Took my cheap recip saw to one of them and wha-la what's this reddish metal showing through

So, at the minimum (because I didn't take all the pieces I got off of the machine in) I ended up with 18 pounds of #2 Cu @ $1.25 a pound. Cleaned everything I could off the SS overall case except a couple corroded brass connectors that I couldn't get 2 wrenches on from opposite sides because of the distance (arms not long enough). Tried to get the 15-year old to help me (he doesn't like my scrap disorganization) and we 1 connecter on the bottom free but then he busted his knuckles on the next one and he was done for the night. I tried to drill enough holes around the remaining ones to pound them out, got one but then the bit wore out. Bought another one the next morning, an Irwin 3/8th "tungsten" coated, thought would have more cutting balls than my standard steel bit but it only lasted 1 1/2 cuts before dulling out. So, took the vast bulk of the SS in the way it was and my main nf guys didn't have a problem with the few brass pieces still remaining in it, total 70 pounds of SS @ .20 a pound.

My cash flow in from the item so far (I still have about 5 pounds of brass left and some pieces I'm going try selling on ebay) is $36. My cash flow out (not counting my half a gallon of gas out of the way) is at least 2 3/8th inch drill bits and maybe my cheap recip saw as my hand-tightened blade holder is jammed up because I bent the blade inside trying to do some cutting on the unit. Haven't taken a small pipe wrench to it though, hopefully can get it loose again to change the blade.

So, some money in after figuring some things out and some lessons learned, even one from Dirty Harry, "a man has to know his limitations..."

Most all water heaters and coolers have copper/alumimun wrapped around the pot.
