    Scrapped My First Treadmill

Wow what a beast.I saw this out of the corner of my eye one day this week heading to work.I backed my Ranger up to this monster and wrangled this thing into my bed and let me say it nearly whipped my arse.I count this as a stupid move by a newbie as I struggled to lift it in my truck but I was determined to not be defeated so I won the tug of war and got it home but it took me nearly 2 hours of experience to find out what she had inside. Not sure if I would do another one unless I have help.

Check ebay with the part number from the permanent magnet motor some are worth a fair bit of money, while the lesser types will sell to the DIY wind mill generators.

Also the motors from some washing machines make good wind generators, I have sold a few on ebay,

Way to persist!!! Back when steel was up, a heavy tread mill after pulling the motor might be worth the back strain getting it into a truck but maybe not now. Some guys have used the motors out of treadmills to make cool wire strippers. Check out some of the old posts by searching "treadmill motors, wire stripper" or something like that.

    me too

i recently turned down a load of steel & shred.

from what the guy told me, i think i would have covered my fuel costs and made just a few bucks more.

people think theyre doing me a favour by letting me know they have some stuff for me to pick up but im sure they know well that if they had to call someone else, they would be charged to remove & dispose of their unwanted scrap.

I do not think Joe Lunch Box ( the average joe ) tracks scrap prices and that they are offering this scrap in good faith.

Scrap only makes big news when it gets stolen.

I agree with you A2, I told a guy about how much his pile in a CL freebie was worth without any nf and he seemed shocked. But I also think there's a portion of the population who think scrappers aren't as smart as them and are willing to work for cheap. Or they don't think at all and just want something gone and know metal is generally worth something...

    I would have to agree.

I never turned anything down for instance picking up an old washing machine could result in seeing an old long forgotten riding lawn tractor or some other treasure buried in the weeds, that I could apply some social engineering to.

Usually the forgotten item once brought to attention went home with me as part of my load. Some folks wont offer heavier stuff not know your capable of loading such a beast.

    Yes people do underestimate scrappers.

If you work alone it helps to keep some tools in your truck to take apart bigger items. A couple of screws or bolts can cut the weight in half, but be careful heavy stuff can hurt you quick. Make sure you always clean everything up before you leave or you won't be welcome back! Mike

I just did a treadmill and after pulling the motor was surprised to see a really nice linear actuator. apparently this model had a power incline. looks like they may go for $30-50 on the 'bay...probably everyone else knows that but I didn't...
