Not my heaviest, but one of my biggest

Loaded up one of the biggest, tallest, bulkiest loads I've ever had last night. I have a body shop I regularly pick up the steel scrap from. They had a guy taking their bumper covers before but he stopped showing up about 2 months ago. Naturally, the pile has been growing since then. So I started looking around for a place that takes them hoping they pay as well. Low and behold, found a place about 20 minutes away and the best part is, they pay 15 cents/lb. This is only about a quarter to a third of the pile. I'm close to legal height and my straps wouldn't reach around much taller. We'll see what kind of weight it is this afternoon. Based on how she drives and the bumper bounce test, I'm gonna guess somewhere in the 600 lb range. But that should put me right around a hundred dollar pay out. I'll take it. I'll post exact weight later today after the drop.

    Nice load !!!

I'm just curious, what type of plastic are bumper covers? Did you need to take all clips, molding, or badges off?

.15 per lb is a great price. Even if you have to remove the clips and moldings.
These bumpers are typically tpo or tpe.

Resourceful is right. Most are those compounds. There's a couple others mixed in. And from my research, most are actually in the rubber family, not plastic. But the place just lumps them all together. One price for any bumpers. They do want them clean of metal, foglights, wire, etc. But the body shop usually has them stripped completely so no extra work for me other than loading. And if I can get a regular stream going, they're willing to up my rate. So long term I gotta get myself a trailer and start calling other body shops. Lol.

The scrap sense is strong in this one. My weight guess couldn't have been closer. Weighed out at 598 pounds. So $89.70 for an hour and a half loading and about an hour of driving total. Totally worth the time and effort. Especially since they unloaded lol. I will definitely be looking for more body shops to pick up from. And if volume increases enough it may even be worth renting a bigger truck or trailer til I have one of my own.

They have 2 locations. Both are chicago suburbs. Now they did say with larger, more frequent drop offs the rate would increase. If it would be enough to be worth shipping, I don't know. You'd have to inquire with them. If anyone wants company name and who to talk to, pm me and I'll forward the info.

Not to steal the OP's thunder, I got curious reading some of the posts on this thread and decided to do some searching. If you will Google the words "sell scrap plastic" you will be surprised at how many good hits there are out there. And if you want to narrow it down add your state to the search box, and you can possibly find some in your state or area. I added Texas in my search, and Fort Worth was mentioned a couple of times.

No thunder stolen. lol. That is how i found these guys along with about 4 or 5 others. Problem was, at least for me, nobody else wanted to deal with the little guy and his truck. Same as the problem a lot of guys have on here with the abs from ewaste. Out of the places i contacted, only 2 wrote me back. And one was the we only take semi's at a time type. So, yes, there"s probably a ton of plastic recyclers around that you can find near any town, but one that will cater to the little guy is a priceless catch. However, I don't own the business, and they're not a member of the forum as far as i can tell, so i don't want to give them the free advertising. But if someone in my general area can benefit from getting in touch with them, i will gladly share the info. I'm not selfish.

I'd be willing to bet that not all of those are getting shredded and recycled.

A couple of years ago, i worked for an auto body supply company. They sold aftermarket (Taiwan made) auto body parts.
One of the services they offered the body shops was free removal of all of the damaged plastic bumpers.
The body shops loved this since they didn't have to worry about how to get rid of them.

Here's where I came in. My job was to drive an Isuzu cabover box truck from Pa back to Jersey to their main warehouse 5 times a week to do the restock run.
I took back damaged items and all of the bumper covers the sales drivers picked up from their customers, then picked up all of our stock replenishment.
At the Jersey warehouse, they invested in some equipment to refurbish the bumper covers that could be salvaged.
They could fuse split areas back together, fill in scrapes and remove dented corners.
Once they were repaired, they were re sold as refurbished units at a discounted price. The ones that were too badly damaged were shredded for scrap plastic.
The drivers that picked up each one put a label on them with their employee ID #. They got $1.50 each for the ones they turned in that were able to be repaired.

Another case of more than scrap value.
