just curious how much you think this would bring...

This guy posted this ad a couple of weeks ago but obviously got no takers as I predicted. Just curious how much people thought this was worth? Not that I want this job but I was going to tell the guy if he really wants it gone, he's probably has to sweeten the pie with some green stuff on top of the scrap value. People have this attitude, "its metal, it has to worth something to someone." Well right now, maybe so and maybe not...

    scrap metal for free

have a truck and other metal that needs to be removed truck is a 72 chevy that's been parted out has no front end or rear end will need removed asap text preferred my number is

I learnt a long time ago that its not the scrap metal that makes you money.
Its how much you know and how much effort you put into it that makes you the money.
And what you know comes from putting the effort into it.

So if scraps not worth anything, you will have to charge $ to do the job.
That $ pays for your effort and knowledge.

Well, jeanbean, what's left of that old truck is probably somewhere around Sioux Falls, SD. Probably a bit of a trip for you I'd guess...

I figure that truck weighed 3-4000# from the factory. Now they've torn into it. No front end, no rear end. Let's be generous here and call it 3000#. That's $22.50 worth of shred in my area.

So if starting your truck, driving there, loading up "for an hour", driving to the yard, unloading, driving home, and spending $20 in fuel is worth $2.50 of " free money" to you....you're a better man than me.

    Good luck out there.

Now, by 1972 Chevy truck, do they mean this:

    or this:

That makes a difference. I'm assuming pickup, but it could be a heavier chassis- Chevrolet sold a lot of the C50 and C60s. Really, the only value would be in selling parts- and that depends a lot on rarity and condition. If it's a pickup that's been gutted like that, I'd guess $50 at the yard tops.

Don't know Matador but it sounds like the guy bought the place and the truck and some misc. metal was there. I suspect, as was said, there's probably less than $30 worth of steel there this guy wants pulled out and hauled away in the winter. As I said, I'm not interested in it because I don't have the capabilities to do it. Maybe he'll find someone for "free" around here but I wouldn't bet the farm on it...

My impression that more of the truck is probably missing, and it's probably not titled.

Someone else can have fun with that one. I know that 1967-1972 Chevrolet pickups are collectible, but I doubt this one is in good condition. I don't know much about the collectability of the medium and heavy duty trucks, but a lot of the farms out here have them, so they're not that rare....

there was a time when I would have shown up with a dump truck, generator, sawsall, and angle grinder.

prices are lower, and my time is worth more than it used to be
Currently looking for a job in or related to scrap/recycling. Relocation is possible for the right offer.

If the truck was automatic it more than likely came with the turbo 400, the second best transmission GM ever built with Allison winning first place.

The turbo 400 is an easy transmission to rebuild, the full kit sells on ebay for $120.95, with 53 kits sold - goes to show this transmission is still in popular demand.

Full instrumentation cluster with ammeter, temperature and oil pressure gauges along with a tachometer, anti sway bars and perhaps a 12 bolt posi all desirable items from this era.

The TH400 is pretty low in value: Search Results

For the value of the time to rebuild one, you could purchase one with a full warranty and have enough money to probably buy another. I'd rather take my chances with one of those than something I rebuilt.

I've owned two trucks with the GM 4 speed automatic. They're good transmissions for sure, but I still prefer a good manual....

Just after I got married taught my wife how to drive a standard and she was a blonde right down to her roots.

There is a certain amount of satisfaction knowing the engine or transmission you overhauled serves you for years with out any problems, plus the money you save can go into performance parts.

I had a similar truck with the 350 coupled to a TH400, rebuilt the engine 0.30 over with 12.5 compression pistons and a mild cam to run on propane.

If you can do that, I'd agree. Most mechanics out here are so bad that I trust my own work more, but that's not a compliment to my abilities by any stretch of the imagination. When we bought our K3500, it needed a transmission (Aren't surprises great!), so I bought a used one and had our mechanic put it in. I found out a few weeks later at the top of the Big Horn Mountains that he didn't put a nut on to secure the shift linkage to the rod that it connects to. Of course, the rod fell loose, stranding me in drive. I shut the truck off, and looked under there. When I found that, I was fuming! I had a nut securing one of the bolts on my cap that was the right size fortunately, so I fixed it and was back in business. Imagine what would have happened if I had been going down a steep mountain road, and couldn't downshift though. That would have been very bad!

I have an F150 with the M5OD (It's geared way too high in first), and have a 1986 Dodge D250 with the NP-435 manual (4 speed with granny low). I really wish the Dodge had overdrive, but that transmission will pull. It was an ex-county truck, so they maintained it pretty well, and the clutch is strong. I've driven manuals that were in poor shape, and they're a nightmare. But, give me a good manual and I'll be very content to row my own gears.

Plus, they don't have to be worked on too often, which means the mechanic can't screw the darned thing up!

Not around here. Its currently .045c lb. So it would be at your rough guess of 3k.....about 100-125 cash. Sounds good to me. This was last week price, so dont if it went up, stayed, or lowered this week.

So your telling me you wouldnt go pick up a 125 cash off the streets????? ****, if it was close. It would be already on my truck.

Two just came into a new contact. He has a reputable scrap yard and will buy anything even without a title. So going to fetch a couple this week. I have a way to run the vin for free to check if stolen or lien. Then free game.

    https://www.nicb.org/theft_and_fraud_awareness/vincheck

Note these vehicles without titles abonded on floreclosed properites. So I do egt paperwork from the bank, stating their possesion and for me to remove. I dont charge them, they just give them to me. One hand washes the other. Niow I got the new contact, gonna be busy. I see a wrecker in my future.

The truck on the bottom, they just made into a rat rod on a youtube hot rod show. Pretty cool. They chopped the frame and shortened it. Then took some springs out since it used to be a dump truck and was way stiff. Only issue is the brakes were not very good being drum all the way around. Either way pretty cool. I wouldnt mind having one to do the same.

This one here free, no title. Guy was cutting it up and asked for my help, i refused. Not worth my time to help for half. 6 months later told me to come and get it. Made me 150 with 20 gas incurred and 20 to the helper. The drive train is still outside as I will make 500 of the heads and scrap the rest. Dont feel comfortable selling the engine as running, even know it supposedly did run and does have compression.. Amazingly cats was still there. Ony had the 2 main cats, not the 2 pre cats. Guy so silly, he tried to cut bell of trans with sawzall.

Bank foreclosure possesion. Cat was empty and got ripped off getting dragged on trailer. Sat in yard since 96. I saw no value in parts being a 85 or 86 so let it go in one chunk. Normally i would pull drivetrain for cores and the rad. And some parts for online sale, but chose not to due to 15 degree weather. Note i let it fly with the alloy wheels due to getting 50 knock off the car without. Plus then i dont have to pay 5 bucks for tire disposal. so let it go in one piece with alloy wheels.

Paid 105....cost me 15 bucks between helper and gas to fetch. Was one mile from my house.

So ya, send all the free cars you want within a hour of my house near scranton, pa lol

Yeah, keep in mind it has to be extracted from the fruit trees that have grown up around the truck that he wants to keep, and he doesn't want any tire ruts left in his yard.

I picked up a ’68 Ford F100 awhile back. Made over $400 parting it out, and it was beat to hell. People were after trim, interior pieces, cab lights, etc. It all adds up.

There are certainly more ways to skin a cat than just selling a vehicle chassis as scrap.

Jeanbean, sounds like you have a good region for selling old cars. But geography matters. Ask Yunkman what they're offering for junked cars in the NB-SD border region or ask TaterJuice what they're offering in non-metro KS. I think their answers will be a bit different than yours. I'm glad your niche is working. More power to ya!!
