Finally got back to scrappin a bit this week. I picked up a large load about a month ago from a school, 22 Dell server blades and 20 incomplete laptops. One thing I got was a beast; a Dell PowerVault 130T. Thing weighs in around 160lbs with no tapes in it. I got it tore down last night.

Both drives were shot. I will tare those down at a later date.


Almost all sheet steel, heavy gauge. Came apart fairly easy tho.


Only one large controller board mounted on the power supply tray.


The robot arm assembly came out in one chunk. The arm worked and did its little dance in its demo mode when I powered it on to test it. I'm hoping to re-purpose it someday ... maybe.


Overall, disappointing. Surprisingly very little wire. Only one large high grade, one mid grade and one power board. Ended up with over 135lbs of steel. Only good thing was very little plastic.

Another project iv been working on is a big clean out at my day job. Last year we upgraded our machine shop to newer CNC mills and retired a few large punch presses. The tooling has been sitting around in a warehouse that we are trying to get out of due to downsizing. Boss wants it gone like yesterday. 5 pallets of different tooling and die pieces. He said i could keep what i get from scrap and doesn't want me to wast my time finding buyers. Im sure with a little work i could find a buyer but hes not interested in selling it. Frustrating, i know.

Ok, so now with my question, should I take the time to optimize my scrap potential? These dies could be clean short prep steel if dismantled. If I take them as is, my yard will only take them as shred. My though on it is if my boss doesn't want me spending time to find a buyer, he probably doesn't want me sitting around taking these things apart all day. So i guess its an open question to you good forum folks ... what would you do?
Im leaning towards just dropping them off as is and moving on.

I pulled one of those (similar) tape drives apart a while ago. Then I googled the part#.

Someone was trying to sell the actual tape drive units for $1000 each on eBay....

I figured, if you only find one buyer, its worth it! So I save most of the bits. I like the robotic arm.

Can those tool/die plates be recycled, resold? It seems such a waste. I guess in China there's a market for that sort of stuff.

The monitors I usually charge, but with the amount of quality towers, I gave the guy a break and just took them free.

Its a '13 eco and she loves it. lots of room in the back for the good stuff and with a bed that will hold just about anything i can toss in it.

the only thing i have a complaint about is the mpg. shes stuck at around 15.5 mpg no matter what or how i drive. My old man has the same truck but not 4wd and he can get 20. Guess thats the price of living in central New York with all the hills/snow.

Took a drive down to the shredder today with my biggest load of light iron to date. Truck had no issues with the weight but the little trailer was screamin.

Tally was 2800#s @156/gt so just under $200

Lesson: Don't test something then start poking around in it without discharging any Caps !!!

I have learned - Get everything you plan on testing and test them all at once. After testing, set them aside to break down a few days later. ( and even after a few days some may still have voltage)

This is how I see it. If im spending as much as I am on payments, I need to find a way to make it pay for itself. Cant do that with a Focus or Prius. I try to keep my work vehicles and play vehicles separate. My Challenger is for play. Trucks are for work, new or old. Plus, im getting to the point in life where im getting tired of bustin knuckles and turning wrenches just to get to work. I do enough of that AT work.

Basically, Id rather turn wrenches because I WANT to, not cuz I NEED to.

I was hired to do a barn clean out and today I stopped by to see what I was getting into. The barn was built in the late 1800s and is 4 stories. Sometime back in the 80s, it was rented out to a local military surplus and hardware store and was being used for overflow and storage. Store and owner went belly up and it all was forgot about. An old friend of mine from high school now owns it and is cleaning it out to convert to a home. I was told one room held old computers and printers from the 80s filled to the rafters. I jumped at the chance.

Ill post better pics of some of the goodies as I do more research and clean some of it up.
