    new guy with a story

Hi everyone I'm Tyrel from Manitoba canada I've been a long time lurker and I have been meaning to join for a while but anytime I have a question I have been able to find the answer will a quick search, so I would like to thank everyone for all the information first of all. Now a little background on me i run a tire/auto repair shop that's how I got into scrapping I always just throw everything in a bin and sold it for shred, thanks to everything I've learned on here I'm now making a lot more now. Now my story this morning I'm in my office and I look outside and a grand prix is backed up to my scrap aluminum, so I go outside and when he sees me coming he slams the trunk and has a Chevrolet cavalier wheel in his hand i ask what he's doing and he tells me how he needs a spare for his Ford pick up so I tell him that these are all scrap and that I have a steel wheel that will work so he jumps in his car and tells me he will go get his truck and be back. I knew he was going to go sell them and there is only 2 places in town to sell scrap, so I called both of them with a plate number and a discription of the guy. Not 5 minutes after I hang up one of them phones my saying the guy tried selling them to him, the yard told him they were stolen and the guy told the scrap dealer that he would bring them back to me. 15 minutes after that the other yard phones me and tells me the guy trying to sell them and the scrap dealer told him he was going to call the police, and the thief said he would bring them back to me and 10 minutes later I had my wheels back. He took a semi wheel and a wheel off a dodge 1 ton so probably about 60 lbs of aluminum, not a great way to start my Thursday morning but at least everything worked out in the end still frustrating though.

I'm sure that's why the local yards put a car on top of the bin of aluminum wheels, even INSIDE the electric fence. OP might want to secure his stash somehow. Aluminum is way too attractive and easy to boost.

Definitely going to do something it's inside my compound so it's locked up at night but I need my gate open during business hours. I'm thinking of building a shed to lock up my aluminum. But my family have been in business here for 23 years and this is the first time we've had trouble so we have been lucky.

I get NZ$1.30/kg for cast Ali rims at the 'Cast Ali' price.

But if the rims are in good fixable condition, I can get NZ$2.oo /Kg as 'Ali rims'.
They save them up and send them by container to the middle east and recycle them/fix them back up, to resell as new car rims.

I didn't know this until my last visit where I sold some rims that I had used a angle grinder to cut the tyres off, I had sliced thru the rims bead and the guy told me that I "Could have got a better price if I had not cut the bead".

8Bolt- Nice job on the quick thinking. I probably wouldn't have been as quick on my feet. Thieves suck but maybe this misadventure for this guy may make him hit rock bottom and the only way up is too repent from his ways (why is he stealing in the first place??). Probably not but we can always pray that it hapens. Maybe you were put in that guy's life at that point of time to be a catalyst of change. We never know...
