Bestbuy charges 25 bucks to recycle a crt monitors and tv's now

I picked up some scrap and part of the deal is I had to take 2 crt monitors, no problem I do my usual take them home and take the copper out and seal the monitor back up and bring them to best buy to have them recycled for free. that has changed bestbuy now charges 25 bucks for each monitor and tv 32" and under. But bestbuy will gladly take your old pc towers, laptops, and cellphones for free what a joke!

local transfer station is $10 under 30" and $15 for anything over I charge a little more to cover costs. no more freebies in this dept unless you go the unethical route.

Here in illinois you can't charge people if they drop off tvs unless you give them a voucher of equal value for future goods/services. So best buy refuses them all together now. You can charge for "premium services" aka pickup. Which is what I've been doing. I've put a hold on tvs for a bit due to an overload of picking them up. Especially the big ones. Lol.

    Joke?
Do you think Best Buy is in the business to loose money? Far from a joke in my eyes.
I charge to take CRTs. I also don't pay for other electronics. Does that make me a "joke"?

I'm not sure about where you're located, but around here Goodwill still takes them for free.

I'm spoiled around here (so far) but its interesting how things are so different from place to place. When non-crt tvs and monitors first started coming out and the electronics industry & government regulatory agencies knew there was a problem with the lead and whatever in the glass, they should have slapped a "disposable" tax on every new set going out the retailers door that funded getting rid of the old crts. But big box stores have political clout and little scrapper guys don't. So Wally World and Best Buy make bank and everyone else with the old stuff plays musical chairs so as not to be the last one holding the bag. Best Buy isn't going to "lose money" by keeping their crt recycling program going, hell write it off as "charitable work" and get it taken off of their corporate income tax. But that takes extra paper work and effort, so its not worth doing even though they could come across as recycling "heroes". Maybe the EPA will allow a lead smelter or two back in operation after Jan. 20, 2017. Don't we make, transport, and use more toxic stuff in this country than getting a bit of lead and other nasties out of old glass...???

I knew this was going to impact the rest of the USA eventually and anyone who believed Best Buy was going to accept them for free forever shouldn't be in the market for accepting them in the first place. CRTs will always be a hot issue.

I put off charging as long as I could until last year when regs changed here locally and state wide for iowa, now there are places that charge 75cents pound land fill and others outside town that charge various prices but way to much for my liking. that's the catch though, best buy was done with me after just the first 10 or so days taking in 2 at a time for free but our city garbage facility only allow for 2 per day as well but charges $8car load so basically $4each but with my truck for $22.50 load I can do two tvs and a load of trash and so when I charge $15small under 20in $25 for 20-32in it pays for most or all of it but again it limits to 2per day so they back up a bit so then what I did was limit people to 5per week so I could only have so many behind.
this way I still get the goodies out of them and they are properly disposed of by the city and I get some of my trash out even though I always have 4-5 loads sitting lol

One of the places our business has boomed over the last couple of months is CRT TV/monitor disposal. We do charge the same as Best Buy, $25 for 32" and less, $35 for larger than 32". Folks are lining up to get rid of their TVs. We do properly dispose of the tubes and we do pay to get rid of them. It is just the way we've had to adapt to d business and we adapted in a way we can still make money. Honestly, thank you to Best Buy for charging. It has help us tremendously.

Goodwill has started hard and heavy refusing CRT's, in the last 6 months, as far as I know, no where in the state of Indiana, can you take a monitor to Goodwill anymore

My local e-waste buyer I have to pay him by weight. I think he is at around .15/lb.. if the plastic is gone (so you have just the tube) he is at .25/lb. It stinks to have to pay.. but it is a small price to pay when I know they are recycled properly and following the law.
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

Sounds to me like someone at bestbuy finally got smart.

People have been using bestbuy to dump their s**t long enough.

Now, lets just hope that bestbuy takes the money they make from the CRT's to dispose of them properly.

    Angry

The EPA is cracking down on folks throwing away CRTs .
About 7 months ago the local garbage service in my area stopped taking them, now folks store old TVs and monitors in their garage.
If I had a dump truck, I could drive up to New York and get rid of the glass for $0.15 per lb ( last I looked ).

Edit: Goodwill was caught a couple years ago dumping CRTs in an abandoned store in Clarksville IN

We'll probably be hearing stories in the near future about bestbuy doing the same thing.

    This is a mess.

No one takes them around here, not the trash guys, not goodwill, no one.
Take a walk in the woods or drive down a back road...and you'll see people are dumping them anywhere they can, abandoned mining areas, back roads are littered with the things...or they have become a permanent part of the landscaping next to the trash cans or end tables on the back porch.

I understand BB refusing them, but someone needs to come up with something or we're destined to have a bigger pollution problem then we already have.
