Had an apartment complex near by call me this morning. They had 26 older apartment sized refrigerators and 18 older electric stoves needing to be hauled away. The fridges had exposed copper on the back from the compressor to the freezer coil. Cut about 2 pounds off each one. I use a big cable cutter similar to a bolt cutter with long handles. Effortless. I bought it at Harbor freight on sale for 9 bucks. I used to salvage the compressors but they pay a few cents more for them than scrap steel. Just not worth the effort. I also ended up with about 20 pounds of electrical wire and cable. Ended up making about 120 bucks off the scrap steel in two loads at 3 and a half cents a pound. I hoard the copper and aluminum and wire waiting for the prices to go up. I currently have about 200 pounds of copper and maybe that much in aluminum and about 300 pounds of electrical wire and romex. Had a guy give me 8 aluminum radiators the other day. Took a claw hammer to the plastic tanks. They break up and fall right off. They are worthless with the plastic tanks intact. I have 5 old brass radiators. They are paying less than a buck a pound currently. Last year at this time it was 3 bucks a pound. I am holding on to them as well. To much work to give the stuff away. FYI--I do recover the refrigerant when there is refrigerant to recover. .
