what exactly is tin and what other things do they consider tin?

took some things in and i had 5lbs of tin 1a tin what is that? i figured it out to be .45 cents and i got 2.25 they said they also count die cast as tin is this normal? on top of that i got a different guy and he lumped my copper tubes in with my wire and gave me #2 and i know for a fact that the tube was #1 and it came from a a/c. does it depend on the guy? it should depend on a common standard and not buy who you get if thats the case i like the old man better=) stainless steel sink was 9 pounds still at .20, copper went down to 1.40 it was 1.50 and held for a long time. out of all the times i have went there i always got #1 for my a/c tubes until now=( all in all i made out with 57.65. why are cans and old sheet worth more than cast ali?

Tin is simply a element like copper, aluminum, silver, etc.

Pure tin is valuable but you don't find it all that much. I believe it is trading in bulk for around $9/lbs but have not checked recently.

#1 copper is clean. No paint, no solder, etc. Some yards grade all copper from any unit with refrigerant as #2 due to residual oil left behind. First guy may not have realized what they were from. #2 pipe and #2 wire will moat likely pay the same. It is common to mix them. Same with #1. Only wire that would be different would be bare bright. Very surprised that your copper price went down. Based on the Comex price, it should be going up. Any yards that haven't gone up, I would expect a significant jump in December when they sign new orders / contracts.

sometimes I have seen excessive corrosion downgrade copper to #2
Currently looking for a job in or related to scrap/recycling. Relocation is possible for the right offer.

some yards refer to shred/light iron as tin. probably referencing tin cans. this probably is not what you are talking about, but may be useful info at some point

Just got $1.60 a pound for #2 today. I was also expecting it to bit a bit higher due to recent up-trend. Oh well, it was only a few pounds. It was the 200 lbs of aluminum that made the trip worthwhile.

If you feel you are being DIC K ED by a yard speak up! You have some knowledge of what's what so don't let them screw you! Worst case is to take it home with you!

I totally agree with hobo. Why do you ask us the questions you should be asking the guys at the yard?

yeah i got you but i just didnt think of that at the time. i just thought it was weird they said they took die cast as tin and i had 5pounds of tin and got 2.25 thats .45 cents that pays out more than ali extrusion why is it so high? yes i will ask the old guy if i get him again why they did not give me #1 for the tubes maybe the other guy just make a mistake but still i did not expect it. i go to it because its the closest and the easiest to deal with. i don't have to fill out a big sheet like the other places i went to or do the finger print still need to show id. i probably could stroll up there with a backpack full of copper and they would take it i dont think i would really need a car at this place=) its quite small much like my original yard that closed=( the more distance you have to go is a profit eater as in more gas you use and it helps if they are friendly=) on a side note how often do you run into die cast?

if I remember correctly, diecast has zinc in it. usually it has a low value, but sometimes there are price surges or something like that.

if anyone has more accurate info, please correct me
