    Ranger pickup 1999

    For $150 I saw a Ranger pickup 4x4 with 4.0 V-6
    I paid half down , next week pay off
    got 105000 miles but some rust cause it's a northern truck
    I had a Ford Free-star with the 4.0 & the MPG was decent enough
    better then my Dodge with 318 CI
    I figure about same weight & should be around 18 - 20 mpg town use
    I don't plan to do big scrap work with it (I still have Dodge ) but I see this as my way back to hunt for
    casual scrap & Good old Dumpster Diving. Also in need of a lower cost MPG ride.
    2 of my kids also need an auto to learn on
    this looks to fill the void .

    yup - one hundred five thousand miles .I see the motor and trans are great But the body is
    what you'd expect of a 17 year old northern truck

    It's atleast worth $400 in scrap. I will buy them all day for $150.

    I know scrap for autos is at $145 ton
    Internet info says 3200#
    I can also get a Pontiac Montana run's
    needs brake work
    I can use emergency brake to stop
    for $200 the guy will sell (different seller)
    I have to see if it starts
    They weigh 4200 # I figure
    Kinda clean except lower rust

    A little rust here and there on the body isn't such a bad thing. You can always replace the cab corners and rocker panels if you have to. The key thing is the frame. It's really hard to do anything with it if the frame is gone. I would check the frame right under where the cab meets the body. There was something about the metal alloy that Ford used for some of the Ranger frames that didn't quite hit the mark. I've seen a couple of them fold up.

    150 $ for a 4 wd truck is a good deal though ......

    check the rear spring shackles for rot as well. that is an issue with some northern trucks
    Currently looking for a job in or related to scrap/recycling. Relocation is possible for the right offer.

    True. I've been using Ford trucks as my daily driver for the last 20 years or so. I've had to replace the spring hangers on every one i've owned.

    There are a couple of other spots on the frame that are prone to rust out too. Usually, the last six inches of frame on the very back get pretty tender. The last two or three cross rails on the ladder frame rust out too. It's not very much fun to deal with. I lifted the body off my current Ford and rebuilt / reinforced the frame a couple of years ago and it was about 40 hours of work in the shop.

    I guess it is what it is when you drive an older truck. If you don't push them too hard, keep the loads under 600 lbs, and just use them for local driving they hold up okay.

    The running joke with a friend who is a inspection mechanic is " I've only got to get another year out of it. "

    He always shoots back : " Bullsh*t ! ...... You told me that last year ! "

    It's got some rust on frame situation towards back of truck left side as far back as spare tire .
    Over all I'm good with old trucks I just drive em slow
    if I carry weight - Hard road use only no back roads .
    To be honest I did not look to close it started up well Trans shifted nice, needs muffler
    at $150 I figured can't even rent a car for a day or two .
    One of the things I'm hoping for is a good commuter See I drive 22 miles a day (round trip )
    it's just one straight run 55 mph HWY to work no police on this road .
    my dodge cost is $5 to $7 a day not to bad for a 318ci 6000# pound truck
    But I have a good feeling of this Ford I bet I can cut down fuel cost by $15 per week
    & still hunt a little as my dodge I never hunt unless i'm already doing a trip some place
    How bad can a 3200# V-6 be on MPG
    I can tell the motor is sweet .
    With all due respect I like my Dodge 1500 it's 17 years old
    runs fine but a bit of a jalopy
    Well I'll have 2 jalopy's now !!

    I have noticed Pickups are very popular here so tons of used one's But rust is a big thing here also .

    rust is always the killer of all things good and holy - what year is your ranger? That 4.0's gone through alot of changes. If it's a 2nd or 3rd gen, you've got a high torque dual overhead cam 4.0 that Ford used in the Aerostars so they'll be descent on gas. My ranger has a 2.3 in it(an engine I didn't even know Ford offered for 1st gen ranger) and probably gets a bit more mpg but not by much.

    I have driven a 2000 Ranger 4.0 since 2002. My best highway mileage has been 20-21 mpg. Normal city mileage is 14-15 mpg. This is normal summer driving with empty loads. My truck now has 200,000 miles and the city mileage used to be a tad better, but getting 18-20 from a 4.0 V6 in the city might be asking too much. Maybe your gas is better there with less ethanol blend.

    Check the spare tire. If you can't get it off on the side of the road then you might as well torch/grind it off now and save the gas of hauling it around, especially if you aren't planning any road trips and always carry a cell phone.

    Check the soundness of the rear bumper before hooking a trailer to it.

    When replacing the muffler make sure to get it situated correctly. On mine one side of the muffler has a middle hole, the other side is off to one side. 3 times my muffler has been installed backwards n upside down causing the tail pipe tip to hit the body when going over bumps. I think it is middle hole to the rear, off-set hole forward in the down position, but could be wrong.

    shackles and spring mounts seem to be a problem with Rangers in general

    awesome score for $150 either way
