21 miles isn't that bad. There are many here that have to travel much further.

Weitsman makes no bones about it. He admits his business model is to move into an area and crush all competition via pricing.
I think it's only a matter of time before he makes an offer on my local yard.

Weitsman did not "claim a victim". It's more of low prices are taking places out. Weitsman's yards aren't super close to Clearfield County.

One of my yards here actually sells to weitsman. Saw the semi pull in last time I was there.

That's always one thing I've had in my favor. The local yard that takes ferrous and non ferrous is 12 miles from home. Another place, isn't really a yard persay. They work out of a warehouse and just deal in ferrous metals, no steel/tin, they are 6 miles away. I don't get much scrap steel and the like anymore, so usually just taking odds and ends of brass/copper/aluminum and lead batteries to the ferrous warehouse.
One of the chain yards went out in the last year locally. They kept shortening the hours per day open and the number of days a week they would be open, figured it was just a matter of time. For a while they were only open think two days a week and only for 3-4 hours on those days. They were about 23 miles away from me.

It has been POURING here in the heartland for the past 16+ hours or so.
Yesterday under sunny skies I loaded my van full of sheet steel ready to purge off in the morning.
I awoke today to this pounding rain that had been going on all night. I knew my yard 22 miles away would be a MUD PIT!
Not really wanting to try and fight the chance of burying a 6800 lb vehicle into the mud.. My best option was to drive to "Yard B" Which is all concrete and 38 miles away.
Took a wet drive out.. loaded off.. and no chance of getting stuck in the mud- Lightbulb!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

Sledge, it was a mess out there yesterday, our yard is all concrete with a lot of dips. Shred and sheet building had 2 foot of water in it, had to have the customers off load out side. Non ferrous wasnt bad all dry inside. We had to put a limit on copper to 10 lbs without doc. tho. The worst part of yesterday was as I don't drive I ride a bicycle to work, 9 miles in the rain not bad for a 61 year old man. Gotta meet up some day.

Yes sir we do!! Dang.. Well I knew Bartholomew County had been hit hard that night- straight line winds and 6-8" of rain overnight.. so I knew both large yards there would be mud pits!

I drive 4 hours to the scrap yard.could sell it local but get 3-4 times as much driving the 4 hours

8 hours driving with a truck ... how much gas ( petro ) you burn through in 1 trip ?!

about $120 in diesel but if I sold my load local I get $7-800 but if I drive the 4 hours I get $2500 so it is worth it
