I was wondering how much difference there is in scrap prices between countries. In Australia I am getting $100 a ton for steel,$1200 a ton stainless $4600 brass and $6800 for copper.Does this sound similar or are we getting a good/bad deal ?

not sure. A ton is 1000kg or about 2200 lb
In the states a ton is normally thought of as 2000 lbs. 2200 lbs is what we refer to as a metric ton and I believe there is one more "ton" used in business. 73, Mike

Just to clarify I am paid by the ton at 2,000 pds. Others in the U.S. are paid by the metric or gross ton. Our prices differ considerably in the U.S. If you live close to the coasts, Gulf of Mexico, or the Great Lakes you will average $ 20-$30 a ton more. I am not an expert on the non ferrous, but will speak to steel.
In the middle of the U.S. where I am at the prices are the lowest in the country because of shipping costs. With that being said, the general public gets $95 for unprepared, $120 for prepared regardless of #1 or #2. With a business account and negotiation I get a lot more. Hope this helps.

Last I looked in my area -
$0.03 /lb USD for shred
$0.045 /lb USD for steel
$0.26 /lb USD for copper wire ... no clue what current price for shiny or dirty is right now.
Large loads ( I believe 4 or more tons ) gets better prices.

A Ton
You need to figure out how your yard pays you. There are many different ways...
gross ton (long ton) 2240 lbs.
metric ton (tonne) 2205 lbs.
net ton (short ton) 2000 lbs.
even if they pay you per 100 pounds you should know if that's net, metric or gross

And I am getting the following prices in Tucson, AZ.
Yellow Brass $1.48 lb.
#2 Copper $2.06 lb.
Sheet Iron $80 net ton so $.04 lb.
Unprepared Steel $100 net ton so $.05 lb.
Clean Sheet Iron $120 net ton so $.06 lb.
Prepared Steel $125 net ton so $.0625 lb.

In Bangor Maine were getting:
$95 / ton light iron / vehicles
$135 / ton #1 prepared
$120 / ton #2 prepared
$2.10 / lb bare bright
$2.05 / lb #1 copper
$1.85 / lb #2 copper
$1.25 / lb Yellow Brass
If we travel another 1 1/2hrs to Grimmel in Topsham Maine we get can $30 more for lite iron and #1 iron.
