New one for me.

Customer came in for scrap drop off, took waaaay too long, was waaaaay to distracting and now, after doing full inventory of my ebay shelves, I went back to look at cameras, the sob stole a few small but expensive items right out of my bins.

If the headache of the matter was worse than being out some money, I'd have called the cops and reported it.

New rule for drop offs, do not cross the line on the floor under any circumstance.

Why can't humans be better...humans. So frustrated, sorry guys.

Stuff like this just makes you lose faith in humanity. May be time for locked bins, but I agree with Hobo. I'd keep the tape, since there's probably a fair chance he comes back

I know the feeling. I used to have a guy come by every so often and every time he would come he would say "Hey do you think I could get a glass of water or something?"
Of course I would go into the house to get it... leaving him alone in the garage.

I didn't have cameras so I could never prove anything. Always made me wonder if a few sticks of RAM or other goodies may have left in his pockets.

I have thought about carrying a sidearm where people could see it when making deals but i figured it would just be more trouble than it was worth....i usually try to direct them to my storage facility where i can weigh items with portable scale and they never have chance to see goodies...perhaps have seperate place for scrap drop offs...either way sux and reminds us that not everyone is honest as we would like them to be

WOW TJ, sorry to hear this. It really does make me sick that people like that can be so ignorant. If you want to make some money, have the decency to make it honestly. Honesty in word and actions speaks loudly and dishonesty and thievery screams. I'll keep it clean but you know what I trying to say. Make sure those cameras are up out in the shop area. I might have some extras if you need, I can bring them the next time I'm out your way. Let me know, I'll email you the models of them.

Well I've had a death in the family so I didnt want to add this headache on top of it with cops, my part timer came in this last weekend and reported it to me via text. He did a complete inventory for the rest of the day after which I spent an hour on my phone rewinding the system and watching it...sure enough got him red handed. Of course I will archive it, but either way he wont be coming back...probably the third or fourth person over the years I've told to kick rocks. 3am texting is a pretty easy way to really irritate me too lol.

Oh and I'm not sure if he was aware of the camera watching him...or just didnt care. I can't do anything about after hours right now, I wish I could. The cameras are new and a brand new generation of IR, with full 1080p that doesnt wash out as bad as the previous gen cameras I had in low light, they now maintain sharpness in IR mode.

On another note, couple days ago I had my seven years clean anniversary, right after i got notice of a death. Now here I am caught between family members because I am the executor, the will was well written but it gives me the responsibility of disbursements of all accounts and property. All day I've had people I honestly don't care much for calling me making it their business to know what I am planning. People get nasty quick when it comes to money and wills. Little do they know I've already talked to a lawyer and will be setting up a trust for all remaining funds to be disbursed evenly to the fourth generation (my kids, their kids...etc). No exceptions, only access is for tuition and misc educational costs or disbursement in full at 25. None of you would be shocked to know I've heard everything from three months behind on the house to paying off their car...etc. My eldest cousin has been helping, he doesn't give a rats ass about the money and is happy his kids will get some college money out of it. The property might just stay with me, I'm afraid if I let it get sold it will cause additional issues with family members, not only that but back taxes have to be paid immediately, nobody's fault, he was sick most of the winter. This whole thing even got the attention of my ex wife who thinks she has a stake because our kids deserve something? I dunno what she is on about but I'm a tired dude from all this politic-ing.

When the dust settles I will let you guys know what I do with the footage. Also we will be erecting a wall, I wasn't going to, but I've decided I'm going to put up a partition wall as a result of this nonsense. This whole thing has cost me labor time and money to boot in lost material.

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I know the feeling of the "will" issue. My mom's oldest sister went nuts over everything that she wanted when grandma passed. She took everything and let her two sisters pick up the pieces. Its terrible to see family taking up like that.

I know you have a high ceiling, maybe just a 3 or 4 four high counter would work. Erecting a wall to the ceiling would take way too much time and money, labor and materials. All you need is a barrier to keep the riff-raff out of your work area. just make sure there is an opening large enough for a pallet to get through, even if its gated.

Sorry for your loses. I do not envy you dealing with an estate, my brother caught all kinds of crap when he was stuck with it. He is now dealing our father's illness and selling off his assets to maintain him in a care facility. 73, Mike.

First congratulations on your anniversary and sorry for your loss. That is something no one can steal from you. Your integrity and decision making is beyond exceptional and these morals and values also cannot be stolen. There is a reason you are the executor of the estate. I cannot think of a better way to use an inheritance than giving the next generation the chance to succeed. As far as the physical items stolen, I believe in the boomerang affect. What goes around, comes around. Now the real question, are you going to feel better about helping the next generation or catching a thief?

By the way, I conceal carry. My opinion, we have less crime here because no one knows who is armed. My mother also carries and no one expects an 85 year old women to have a pistol. Wearing a firearm openly makes you the first target of a criminal. As my mother always says, her first choice will not be to kill a criminal but instead to make him think about what he did every time he sees a good looking women. I will leave it at that because I promised to tone it down.

I feel like the past is so far gone now and with so much built around my effort any desire I had to hide in the past from myself is long gone. I can say that with certainty that it's simply gone. I actually haven't drank either in quite some time. My girlfriend isnt a drinker and I'm just not into it anymore. Even with this stuff going on I still feel more like I'm just tackling one more task than I am stressing about loss. I have had months to prepare for this, it was not sudden persay, heart gave out but we knew it was coming.

Putting something together for the next generation to have is all I really want. So many people can't plan their next paycheck that I feel this will pay off in spades regardless of how my family perceives me. I know there is some medical debt I need to address, things will be taken care of over time, were going through everything we can find and paying what we can. The property is the most valuable by a wide margin and I think it should stay in the family. I really am not being greedy about it, it's just one of those things I don't trust on someone else. There is an active tree farm there that ive managed since my return to Wisconsin years back. I would of course split it's possible profits into the trust though. For me it's one of the only stress relieving things I have to see the trees and shrubs I care for grow and shape themselves, and then be able to drive to some of the larger transplant locations and see my family trees 5 years later is pretty nice too.

Ramsey's strategies were practiced long before I heard of him. I am also debt free and my financial goals have been met. Scrapping keeps me out of trouble. The other host I would recommend is Clark Howard. I learn something new every time I hear his podcast. Out in the Buffalo Commons I cannot find him on the radio.

The original intent of this thread was theft. I am lucky that to steeling in my locations would require heavy machinery or taking a chance that the owner is not armed. I do not need a line to require visitors to stand behind, but I have been to yards in big cities that have barred windows and locked doors in the office area. I feel for those that deal with these conditions.

A different perspective is the fact I do not have to take the keys out of a vehicle (Seven vehicles with keys in the ignition), never have to lock the doors to my homes (Do not even know where the keys are at), and do not hesitate to leave a truck with guns, wallet, checkbook, etc. unlocked. Our attitude is that if someone is in trouble, they are welcome to help themselves if we are not around. Neighbors have borrowed several of my vehicles and equipment and returned it with full fuel tanks. The best part is I do not worry when I have to help myself in the middle of a blizzard or 2 in the morning. The reason this is post is to remind members there are still safe areas and good people.
