Hurricane Irma

"A Day in the Life of a Scrapper" is about to turn into the longest day in my life with Irma set to roll right over the top of my Citrus County on Sunday night. I have been through several hurricanes and tropical storms in the past. This one has me scared. I woke up last night at three worried about all the things I hadn't secured. The back porch has been made into an interior room... actually Florida glass (which is named so the can charge a ton for tinted vinyl) and I realized that with predicted wind speeds, my new "interior" porch into an arboretum. The neighbors fence is sketchy, the bath window needed a cover, blah blah blah... Bath window covered first thing. Generators fired up and tested. cord adapter checked for compatibility. The back porch was haunting me. The neighbor steps up and asks what I needed for plywood to cover. Six pieces of ply have now covered the two exposed window walls. Tomorrow if the weather isn't too bad yet I may try to slap a couple boards on the shop windows.

Got everything wrapped up. Shop is boarded up. I anchored the metal shed to the ground (I was holding off because I wasn't sure it was at it's final resting point). I had a couple thick baking pans I put over the window in the garage door. Gassed up the smaller generator. Got a plan going to keep the fridge cool. First band is just rolling through.

Probably is going to be a long day...

Stronger bands coming in. Still have power. still looks like it is heading straight for us. Sleep is over rated....

You did not pay your neighbor for the plywood? That guy must be a ***** to not try and make a few bucks, after all if you live in Fla you should have some plywood on hand!

I offered to give $200 to his church. He declined and told me he was just being neighborly and that I would probably be in a position to help him out in the future. I doubt the idiots astranded at the gas pumps would ever be in a position to help me out in the future.

I'm in Volusia County, it's blowing pretty good, some flooding.

Tomorrow is day four with no power, but at least I still have water. Power company says I should have lights by midnight Sunday night. No damage to my home at all, so I feel very lucky. Gas is hard to find, but I got lucky today as a station owner that I haul scrap for let me know he had a truck coming in. It pays to be loyal and fair to your regulars! So tomorrow, I'll be up early for a scrap run. Lots of available aluminum from downed lanais. Lots of business from the 250 plus business cards I've distributed. Hope the rest of you have fared well.

Power is still off. I have no idea how people lived in Florida before air conditioning
