    it seemed the most profitable way to do it.

    but those printers u have seem much bigger- i would try to completely dismantle at least one- just to see how much of non ferrous in in them altogether so u can judge if its worth the time & effort to strip the rest.

    I really wish I had the time to break these down. My property is too far away to make hauling them home worth it. It's a 60 mile round trip to my house and then it will be another 60 mile round trip taking them back to the yard once I break them down. I have been bringing a few items home and I might bring a few more items home this week but most of this has to go strait to the scrap yard.

    I am pulling any easy to get brass, copper, wiring, motors, stainless and aluminum but I know I am leaving a lot of that on these machines simply because it won't be easy to get at it.

    Just make sure what category they will be paying for the intact items, as some may go as unprepared or even clean sheet iron for more than shred price. I will look for them next time I go to the yard!

    Well it looks like I will probably be breaking the big printing presses down myself and loading them onto a flat bed. No one in town wants to touch them except for one yard that wants to charge too much for the removal and not pay enough for the scrap.

    The original owner(sold the business 2 years ago) stopped by today and gave me some pointers on how to separate the individual units.

    I have had my 2 and a half year old with me so far on this job and she's been doing great between running around the warehouse playing with all the random stuff and spending time in the truck watching cartoons on my tablet. But if I end up messing with these big printing presses I am going to have to start working on them at night because she definitely can't be around when I am running a torch and lifting equipment that exceeds the rating on the forklift.

    Lets do some math. I am thinking 60-80,000lbs so lets say 70k at $145 a ton= $5075. Flat bed fee will be 200 per trip to the yard so I can subtract $400-600.

    I would really like to bring one unit across the scale so I can get a better idea about the weight before I commit to removing everything.

    You could try a truck scale. I think Triple t has one.

    Drive on unloaded, go load up, come back check weight. Assuming a yard won't let you ride over theirs. CAT scales shouldn't have any problem with it, as your paying for it. I could be wrong but hey...it's an idea! Call first tho an ask. Been a while since I been to Triple T, so I could be remembering wrong about them having a scale. Think they do though as their the only truck stop if I recall near Tucson, rest are up around Phoenix if I recall.

    Maybe @Gorven can chime in with if normal folks can use those scales. He's got experience with such I'm sure.

    Good luck to ya 520. Oh an try the pie if you haven't. Triple T is known for it's awesome pie, or used to be anyhow. LOL.

    Well it turns out the owner of the scrap yard I have been using has a big flatbed trailer and he will only charge me $50 to haul in one of these units. I think i'll haul one of them in next week so I can better estimate the money i'll make on the scrap and then i'll go from there. If the smaller units weigh 5,000 lbs then I am sitting on 100k+ at $150 a ton. That will bring in $7,500.

    Sold the pallet racks from the warehouse for well above scrap today. They come on friday to break them down and haul them away. Might have the paper baler sold fingers crossed. Here are the 2 loads I hauled in today. The smaller machines are trimmers/cutters and the bigger green one is a paper feeder.

    So I am done with all the smaller equipment I can haul myself. Cleared $2,300 on my end after paying %20 percent of the steel and %30 of the nonferrous to property management. Now it's time for the real profits to start.

    They accepted my offer on hauling away the big presses. My offer was "I'll take care of it in 6 weeks but you aren't getting a share of the profit". Also made a deal to clean the rest of the warehouse in trade for their forklift. No idea what i'll do with it once I am done with these presses. Maybe just drive it up and down my street once a day to go and check the mail? Maybe park it with the mast extended all the way up and a pirates flag on it? Maybe i'll even get a trailer to haul it around on so I have it for the next big job like this.

    About how many tons of stuff was the "small stuff"? And what do you think the big equipment weighs?

    I would have to look at my receipts to get a total on the smaller equipment. I hauled 24 loads total and probably averaged around 1000lbs per load. But I also hauled a whole truck load of wire and 120 lbs of number one copper.

    I think the big equipment weights no less than 100,000 pounds. But the guy from CFS and a guy from another scrap yard both estimate 130,000-150,000.

    Oh and it turns out that along with cats and stripped copper wire, scrap yards can't buy aluminum loading ramps. I asked if they needed to be cut in half before I brought them in and they informed me they can't buy them. But I guess they will make pretty awesome ramps for my forklift.

    We have a member here that buys cats, and yep that sucks on the stripped wire I had some I left out in the elements for a few years in hopes to sell it, they still said no, so it went mixed in with my dirty brass little by little.

    I have a guy who buys stripped wire and wire with varnish like from motors or CRT's as number 2 copper.

    So I am doing the whole warehouse clean out in trade for the forklift. So I spent the day doing demo on a few walls. I also got the small printing press disassembled into 4 pieces. Just need to strip the wiring before I haul it off. I was thinking I would load it on the big truck coming to get the big presses but now they will fit in my trailer. Here are some before and after pics.

    I was just put in contact today with a company that brokers the sale of big printing presses like the ones I have been planning on scrapping. Since I still have 6 weeks to get them out of the warehouse I am going to take a couple weeks and let them try to sell them first. I know some of you guys already tried to convince me to put them up for sale before I scrapped them but I personally don't know enough about the presses to sell them myself. The company I am working with seems to know what they are doing and hopefully will be able to get them sold.

    Well I am on the home stretch! I spent the last week and a half disassembling/separating all the printing presses and today I got all of it loaded onto 2 trailers. The hardest items to load were some of the taller presses that needed to be laid down on the flat bed. Although a couple of the shorter presses took a few tries for me to get up the ramp and into the back of the trailer with high sides. It took me a about 6 hours to get both trailers loaded.

    i was going to read the comments, but tl:dr I am probably repeating/confirming

    There is a market for some parts on obsolete untits

    some companies still seek out older units due to reliability, or their specialty

    commercial units usually have ram and pretty boards, also good steel weight and possible nonferrous

    there used to be any ebay seller on here that went by commission, anybe a min, not sure

    research specific units
    Currently looking for a job in or related to scrap/recycling. Relocation is possible for the right offer.

    ok, i skimmed a little, cool score

    many yards have roll off service for a % or perlb fee.

    if the job is big enough, the yards buyer might come out and make a bid/deal on it with you.
