To the cop that is on this fourm

I live in dallas tx an was just pulled over for not having any safety chains. I knew my trailer did not have chains on it...but I was going to go get some an had PULLED INTO walmart to buy them an the cop stopped me IN the walmart parking lot.

Is there anything from your stand point of view on how I should go about taking care of this one?

    The ticket is $217

    $217!?

    Ouch.

    Hope you get it resolved.

I have a trailer story. Have the chains, forgot to hook them up....long story short it came uncoupled for some reason, and went off the road and leveled a sign. Fine was $150.

Ever since it's bothered me, because I KNOW I coupled it (it's Bulldog coupler, so you know if it's latched or not), I had the right ball, etc. Just forgot to attach chains.

I never had a trailer come off as of yet. Been towing trailers for a good long time. But there is a first for everything.

thing is the cop pissed me off...I WAS pulling INTO walmart to get me some chains an he STOPPED ME INSIDE the parking lot..is not that a public road way?? He could of gave me a brake an let me slap the chains on as I was going to.

some people down here....will take some of the dumbest things...I am still shocked someone took my safety chain off of my trailer its not like they COST that much...

Hate to be a negative nancy here, but you didn't NEED to bring the trailer to walmart to get the chains. You took the risk, and this time it didn't pay off like you had hoped.

But a side note, I feel for ya. My trailers wire harness has been "fatigued" from dragging on the ground by mistake, and my driver side lights don't work. Been like that for about 2 months now. I always take the back roads, those 2 lane roads, to the scrap yard now.

Seems cities are looking for any reason to raise some cash, daughter got a Failure to Yield(4 pt ticket), they were nice enough to reduce it to Defective Turn Signal(1 pt), but still wanted the $210 fine. 4-5 years ago that would have been $40 bucks and seeya!

Fight the ticket. You have proof that you bought the item. Tell the judge. the cop was a d h ead for not just giving you a warning as you were in the wal mart parking lot!!!

I have had a trailer come off...twice. One with chains, one without. The one with chains is pretty self explanatory. It did bang up my tailgate. The one without chains...I got lucky. I was turning a corner when it came off. the only thing it hit was the curb, and I was empty. A few years back, in my dad's town, somebody lost a pickup box trailer. It went into a front yard & mowed down a 4 year old girl I saw another one come off it's truck. Luckily it went off into the ditch. All 4 of these were while cornering.

I know that is irrelevant to the original post....and I'm not passing judgement. I have been guilty of that one more than once....just sayin'.

I know it's kind of ass chapping being nailed for an issue that you were on your way to fix. My dad got a cracked windshield ticket once about 25 years ago...on his way to the shop for his appointment to get it fixed. He was fired up about it, but had to pay it nonetheless. I'm no law expert but you're probably screwed on the ticket. Most judges will just say...hey, you broke the law...too bad...pay up & get out. However, in the past, I have fixed the problem, then immediately gone to the county attorney's office with proof that I have rectified the situation, and have asked for the charge to be dismissed. Most often, they have counter offered a lesser charge. Just a thought.

Never seen a trailer un hitch personally, but I have seen a trailer tire roll off the axel and down into oncoming traffic rolling about 50 mph. Was very odd to see a tire just rolling down the road, aired up and all.. No one was hurt though.

You might get lucky and just get court costs if you bring in your receipts, but being in Dallas you're probably out of luck and going to have to pay the ticket.

easy i live in dallas too and have for 32 yrs. what you got should be a fix-it ticket. you provide proof that you fixed the problem in a certain amount of time and they drop the ticket but you still have to pay maybe a $20 court cost. im sure its too late for this ticket but remember for next time.
