I cut open my first sealed unit today. I cut it towards the top just under the weld after I cut it, the motor would not dump out. I don’t see what would be holding it. What am I missing. I thought it would slide right out. Thanks for any help.

what kind of compressor was it? fridge style or cylinder a/c window unit, dehumidifier type? If cylinder a/c style, your going to have to cut down the side untill you get under the stator and then cut across left or right to loosen the grip of the steel around the stator to free it. Leave that little bit of wire attached to the stator to help pull it out after cutting. May still need a pry bar or crow bar to loosen

It was an ac compressor. Thanks.
Rotary and scroll compressors need to be cut down the side to free up the winding. On piston compressors, the winding is held in by 4 bolts.

There's like 3 big 'Spot welds' holding the Iron core in there.
It's probably MIG welds, but it's a round spot pretty much level with the outside of the casing.
I don't bother cutting open AC compressors, too much time & oil & cutting disc & dirt & noise & grit. For the same amount of Copper that's in a fridge compressor.
And then sometimes you get one with mixed or just Aluminium wires...

If I remember correct they have an attachment at the end Grind out side case in a small square at attachment area
I did a few and never found it worth my time
I imagine with some tools it would be faster work
but for me with just a grinder Forget it

Here you go.
You would have to cut a lot of sealed units to afford one of these.
