Something interesting has happened in our household- my wife is SLOWLY BUT SURELY starting to get a little bit involved in scrapping. It started when I took her a couple of times to the scrapyards when we were together running errands. Then I took her to a dumpster that I go through frequently- we went a few times to this one too. She even knows the name of the company now.
The next step was that she marveled at things people just throw away. For instance, I'm constantly saying "here are some more free light bulbs."
She goes for walks every morning. One day she found three $1 bills as she was rounding a corner. She then was saying things like "Steve, the house two streets over at the end of the street has a big pile of stuff sitting out and I saw some metal too."
Then today, she said she actually picked up something sitting by the curb. It was a very nice tool bin on four wheels that can be used for gardening, etc. It holds standup tools like shovels and rakes. It also has about 20 pouches on the sides for smaller items like gloves, screwdrivers, etc. It looks virtually brand new. A nice little item she found, I have to say!
But, in the spirit of "Be careful what you wish for" (and I was hoping she'd become interested in scrapping), where does this lead? Here are some possibilities:
1) We take separate cars to do CurbCo stuff and I see her turning into a neighborhood burning rubber because she knows she is just ahead of me.
2) She says "Hey Steve, come outside in the back yard for a second." I say, "Yeah, what's up?" She points to a part of our yard and shouts with glee "Craigslist score!".
3) She sees me stripping wire one night and says "Here, let me show you a faster way." Then, in a manner that TV show character MacGyver would be proud (the old one- Richard Dean Anderson- not sure about the newer one), she shows me an absolutely brilliant way to take down something very difficult. As a result, there becomes a new category of wealth- BBB's (bare bright billionaires).
4) At Christmas parties she is heard saying "I could out-scrap him (meaning me) any day!"
This last part of course is said in jest, but it is fun thinking about where this could potentially lead. I will post any further developments as they occur. (That is, unless my wife becomes an SMF moderator and chooses to censor what I say!).
