Robbed again

I know alot of this is my fault but.....Upon returning from vacation in August I came home to my garage emptied of all my Brass and Copper. Without going into details, the various metals combined to about 1800 lbs, much of which was bare bright. It was nearly impossible to move because of the "clutter" in the garage and the metal was way in the back. Probably someone in my own town. This is the second time (in 2 different houses). Police and detectives came, filled out reports and I haven't heard from them since. Wish there was a better way to keep track of large quantities of scrap being sold at one time....

maybe u should visit the yards near you and check if theres any items that you can identify as being yours, if u had anything unique.

All the different yards i use all have surveillance cameras set up. Im sure the local yards in your area do as well

P.S. I hope you catch the crook, as stated before, start with who knew you had this stash and/or knew you were a stock-piling scrapper that was going on vacation...?

Wasn't really waiting for a price, just overwhelmed with months of construction on my house. I did say that much of it was my fault. There were a lot of things a could've done to prevent it but din't think it was needed . My bad....

With all due respect ... i just don't buy that. Never agreed with the idea that you should blame the victim and not the thief.

In my experience, seeking revenge is like drinking poison to kill your enemy. If you're gonna go all darkside .. use your noggin and do it in a way that it doesn't blow back at you.

It could get messy though. This is the second time in different places. There's a chance it's somebody close to you. Maybe a trusted friend or perhaps even someone in your own family. (Gawd forbid it's one of your kids.) A lot of times it's drug / alcohol related in some way. Maybe somebody with a grudge against you that's looking to even the score ? Anyone you know fit the profile ?

A lot of people have renter -or- homeowner insurance. You filed a police report. Maybe the insurance company could at least partially reimburse you for the loss of your property due to burglary ?

The first time it was an ex-student of mine who knew when I was at work. He took it in broad daylight and my neighbors saw him but thought he worked for me. Police said that there was nothing they can do as the kid had many priors and that was the least of their worries with this kid.

Well ... it's a little something more to go on. You wouldn't want to run off half cocked .... but is there any possibility that the kid came back for a second helping ?

It's kind of a shame that these things happen. I guess it's the world we live in. The vast majority of people out there are pretty honest but there are a few bad apples.

Unfortunately in America the one that got robbed then did the beating would be serving more time.....around here aggravated assault carries 3-5 years and petty theft carries 11 months 29 days

This a gentler place. Not much violence going on that i know about. In this place, it's generally considered low class poor white trailer trash behavior. That's not how we solve problems. It's a civil society.

That said ... the punishment for being a thief here is far worse. The wheels turn slow, but you're totally f****d when what you're doing eventually catches up with you. You either voluntarily exile yourself -or- spend the rest of your life working your a$$ off in an effort to earn your way back into the good graces of the community.

They're not the forgiving sort. The people here detest a thief.

I know of one guy that chose to leave the state and then hung himself a year or so later. He had lived here his whole life.

Maybe the loss of his family & community was too much to bear.

For whatever it's worth ... we don't have a lot of theft here.

The old skool biblical based law of raining down the wrath of G-d and cutting off the hand of a thief made sense back in the day. Not so much now. We live in a different age.

I gotta disagree.

I think it's a lesser world when thieves can rob with impunity knowing that property crimes are waaaaaay down on law enforcements' list (where's the revenue in getting you your stuff back?)

Recidivism rates are pretty darn low when thieves know there will be a very high price to pay for taking other peoples' property.

I think we both despise the thieving. You work hard for your stuff. To have somebody just come along and take it ... well ... that's just wrong. What's yours is yours.You have a right to the fruit of your labor.

It gets to be a problem when law enforcement is involved. First off ...justice ( not vengeance ) says that the punishment has to fit the crime. Thieving is harmful but it's not THAT harmful. You gotta go moderately when dishing out the punishment. It's the right & just thing to do.

The second difficulty is that it's a problem of resources.I would imagine that law enforcement is like any other job. You've gotta set your priorities and do the best you can with what you've got. Obviously, and armed robber doing violent things and hurting people is a lot more of a threat to society than a non-violent sneak thief that comes and goes unnoticed. Then you've got things like murder,rape,child abuse, drugs, and organized crime gangs that have to be higher up on the list of priorities.

Property crimes .... maybe not so important ? You might have to expend tens of thousands of dollars in taxpayer money to successfully prosecute just one case of theft. After that ... it costs at least 20 grand a year (of your money) to keep the a$$hole in jail.

Not saying that this is right by any means. Just saying that this might be the reality of the situation.

MSM's solution might work better. Grab a couple of your buds, jump the thief , hold him down, and physically punish his hands for misbehaving.

Do it in an evenhanded way ?

Maybe nail his hands to a tree for the first offense ?

That would get just about anyone's undivided attention w/o causing lasting harm.

LOL ... imagine having to explain to the cops WHY someone nailed you to a tree ?
