    latest run

well, thought id drop a line about my latest run.. we got roadside on at the moment so lotta people out and about.
usually i leave the light gauge and stuff for the bloke with bigger transport, and look for mainly non ferrous.
pick up abit of burnt copper from motors (air compressors mainly) quiet a few starter motors, fair bit of cast ally,
lot of old computers which i collect boards out of for gold ap recovery, heaps of low grade copper wire which adds up, and a bit of ally.
managed to net about $470 aud which wasn't too bad for an hour after work collecting and 2 hours breaking it down on sunday.
hey any other aussies in here? drop a line if ya local. be keen to hear about other collections and how it breaks down and happy to compare prices around the globe... will be back at it again untill its all gone

You must of picked up a lot stuff to amass that much kangaroo money. I just looked up and the Aussie dollar is worth 69 cents USD so you haul would be $324 here. There must have been a lot of fairly clean Cu in your pickups, not going to get over $300 USD with cast alum and insulated wire unless you're picking it up at almost every household. People must have been throwing out a lot on non-ferrous, nice score!!

I find it best, because we use Metric measurements here in NZ, to save as much of any one metal up as possible & take it in then.
A feed/seed sack is a good size for Aluminium. Great for Copper @ 55 Kgs a sackfull.
A fadge ( Gaylord for Americans ) ( LoL @ both ) for Ali drink cans.

The thing is, every weigh up is a bit over what the number is. Like a 10 Kg weighup is anything between 10.01 Kgs & 10.99 Kgs. So a average of 10.5 Kgs on that weigh up.
So every 10 sales of Copper costs you 5 Kgs in Copper weight.
@ 5 Kgs a sale, thats 10% of your weight lost.
Americans & British use Lbs so their division is in 454 grams & nowhere as noticable.
I noticed last week where the guy pulled out some Domestic from my burnt Copper wire & 13 Kgs become 11 plus 1 Kgs....

Also, if you do save it up ( and store it 8n a safe place & dont tell anybody ) once you get to 200 Kgs, call your scrapyard & say that you "have a good amount, over 200 Kgs etc " & they might need something like that to fill a order & will pay a bit extra for it.
Even competing yards call up other yards to do this, even in competition they know that they both can make more $$ in the long term by doing this.

So, when you're saying $4.60 for copper, you're probably measuring it in kilograms, correct? Your $4.60 divide by 2.2 would be about 2.09 a pound here. Take your Aussie dollar value (69%) of USD and that translate to $1.44 U.S. Still, that's a lot of scrap to find in a couple hours, how many times to they do "roadside" down there, once a year...?

we do roadside twice a year.. yeah all weights in kg. got lucky and most of it was in one spot. get a bit from the tip every now and again, $1 per sink and ill only grab the ones with any brass fittings on them so its adds up. but almost at the end now and getting scarce...

hey guys, did the turn and burn for jan toady, had a hard time deciding if i wanted to hoard or not but figured id do the run before the bottom drops out on everything..

So i spent $145 buying some scrap.

    x5 Ally rims $20
    x5 Ally Rims $25
    Auction - 1 ton electric motors $100

and picked up a heap of free stuff from the tip, 3 solar hot water systems (copper) air cons, and some brass.

Sold x5 ally rims $100 (not at the yard, some guy saw them and picked them up out the back of the ute)
and one run before today netted $75 for the air cons.

    todays run..

    H/G 900kg @ $200/t $180
    Burn cu (from motors) 44kg @ $4.8kg $211.2
    No 2 pvc wire 7kg @ $1.6 $11.2
    Brass 12kg @ $3.6 $43.2
    Cast ally 24kg @ .75c $18
    Copper pipe 30.5kg @ $5.3 $161.65
    Electric Mo 134kg @ .45c $60.3
    Batt 32.5kg @ .38c $12.35
    All rims 65kg @ $1.1 $71.5

Sorry for the long post, will figure out how to post pics for the next one. Being a good customer i managed to negotiate a slight better rate so my prices are 10 - 20c higher than book price... Pretty happy for jan, got roadside (curb co) coming up in march, might hoard a bit then depending where prices go, if i find enough to hoard. Hope this year turns out good for everyone and happy scrapping guys.
