Well... I got banned from a yard today

Howdy y’all, long time no post. Pretty stupid move on my part but I’m pretty sure I got banned from a yard here in BHAM today. I picked up a fire proof fire cabinet from work today, first time I’ve ever seen one. The thing weighed at least 400lbs and I thought it was going to be made of two thick layers of steel with a thin layer of fiberglass or concrete in between. Was expecting to have a weight deduction for the filler.

Anyway, I go to the closest yard to my work and the scale manager tries to move it but assumed it was a normal file cabinet since I had it strapped in my truck. He waves me on, and the magnet operator takes it out of my truck and smashes it on the ground. The thing has a paper thin layer of steel around 3” of concrete, so basically all garbage. The owner got real pi$$ed off and I apologized over and over again to the foreman but I heard over the radio that I wouldn’t be allowed back. They loaded it back into my truck and I took it to the landfill.

100% the stupidest thing I’ve done in my 8+ years of scrapping, as well as my first ever rejected load. Oh well, learned something new and there are many other yards in the city I can use instead. The sun will rise again tomorrow.

Yup, those things got concrete in them. It wasn't stupid though if you didn't know. I would call and talk to the owner.

Oh well. I didn't know. I'm sorry. Your experienced guy looked at it and he didn't know either...

He probably knew already what those fire proof cabinets are made of. I'm sure it was yellow and has fireproof stickers all over it if its similar to the cabinets we have for chemicals and paints. He maybe just wanted to break your b@lls . Thats why he smashed it in front of you thinking you were trying to get away with something and he'd nail you. Oh well..... live and learn right ?

most of the yellow/red fire cabinets I've played with aren't filled with concrete. They work on suffocation. They have regular looking 4/5 drawer fire "proof" filing cabinets. Those are hard to suffocate.

ah man that sucks. If I have anything I think might be questionable I always go to the scale person and ask ahead of time so that if it does end up being something like the situation you were in you can at least be like, "yea I wasnt sure thats why I asked you first" and it probably would go over better. This is also one of those times where if its a place they know you and you go to often they may just tell you "sorry cant take that" with no hard feelings and let you be on your way. This happened to me recently. I had loaded a bunch of stuff from a pickup, not knowing that in one of the bins, there was a full propane tank. the magnet crane operator got everything out with the magnet crane and when he got that bin it flipped sideways and fell out. He just kept unloading with the crane and then when it was all out he came down and said "hey man we can take propane tanks unless you take the values out first" and "I said okay totally get it" and threw it back on the truck and weighed out, no big deal. That could have gone another way if I didnt go there pretty frequently I think

I went a yard once and the guy opened up all of my appliances and file cabinets that I had stuffed with small shred items. I was getting a little pissed off at him and then found out earlier in the week someone had dropped off items full of bricks. So I get it. Could be why they seemed so angry on the safe. Would have been way more productive to just have told you we can't take those items.

Old strategy using belly side dumps at a yard using a magnet. The operator filled the trailer with water and after the magnet cleaned the trailer he would drive around the yard emptying the water. Caught with a security camera and fined by local authorities for unlawful dumping of polluted water. Honesty will pay off in the long run.

Had a tree today inside a corn planter and when confronted said it was a Christmas tree for the yard. They laughed and reloaded it on the trailer and told me to take it to Charlie Brown. They pulled it from the steel with a claw after using the shear to cut the planter. They knew I could not get it out and gave me a break because of my previous dealings with them. Remember the two H"s, humor and honesty.
Give back more to this world than we take.
