Anyone ever scrapped out a 12 ton ac unit? Ideas on weight of copper an motor in them?
I am getting 5 12ton units but due to space have to sell them to a sister company I work with. They told me they will pay me a % of the total metal scraped out of each one.I don't have a clue how much metal (copper) is in each one...don't want someone keeping bigger pockets than they should be..

No sure what units you have but my company makes the condenser fan motors that go in these. I've been to the York plant and seen as many as 6 of these fans in one of the big rooftop units. Each motor has about 2 lbs of copper in it. Of course, the big quanity is in the coil (watching a fin press put those fins on the coil is an impressived thing)

It doesn't actually weigh 12 tons. I forget why they call it that. A central air unit for a home is about a 2 to 3 ton unit, but weighs around 300 to 500 lbs I would imagine.
EDIT:
1 ton equals 12,000 BTU. Has to do with cooling capacity.

Oh, so like your standard rooftop commercial AC unit? Here I was, picturing the flatbed trucks hauling in ACs the size of a small building.

Easyrecycle would be the one to clarify, but yeah I do believe he is talking about the roof top units you see on malls, commercial buildings, etc.
You are right. I wish they where 12tons each =-D I would be going far more crazy than I am now. They weight a good bit...not sure how much tho. The 12ton part is based on the cooling as someone said or..thats that I have been told....its one of those things where I say...ok what ever you wana call it is fine....but I want it.Originally Posted by IdahoScrapper

A 12 ton package unit is pretty rare most units are 10 ton 15 ton and 20 ton for Commercial units,I am in south florida and recycle commercial units all the time,a tipical 10 ton unit usally has 3 compressors 240 lbs of coils 30 lbs of copper ten lbs of #2 wire 20-30 lbs of freoon r-22 and about 600-800 lbs of tin shreadable

Johny, that posting was from a year ago, I'm sure the AC's are long gone, although the info you supplied could be used for someone thinking about buying something like them for scrap.

I just noticed after you said that it was a long time ago,but i gave him thev avarge we get out of units
It was a guess. I have since scrapped a unit and know it weighs far less.A litttle bit of exageration on the 300-500 lbs guess.
