It is still pretty active, maybe not as much as in the early days but scrapping is not what it was then either. We still have daily posts and new members. Buyer/seller and service posts are being made and thousands of guest are still showing up daily from google results. Happy New Year, hope 2022 is a good year for everyone.

Market has always fluctuated. I remember the 80's and 90's when shred and steel was paid 1 cent per pound. Market was so bad that they closed mines and mining towns at that time. I also remember when many newcomers added competition in the late 90's before most of them disappeared later. There was always an ewaste boom, the Chinese change of rules, the copper price pike and crash and so on. Copper prices have now returned higher than what they were before the 1996 crash. It is a cyclic industry.

I've been here for awhile and the forum does seem to be pretty quiet. In all honesty ... scrapping is quite a bit of work for a little bit of money. The vast majority of scrappers out there don't do all that well with it. It's just a bit of extra income to supplement what you make from your prime gig.

Much respect to those who can scrap full time and actually make a living at it but they are the few and the brave. They've been dropping like flies over the last five years.

Wages are up and the guvmin't has been giving away lot's of free money in the form of stimulus checks and enhanced unemployment benefits. A lot of people aren't even going to their regular jobs because they are getting paid more to stay at home and sit on the couch.

For most folks ... interest in scrapping comes and goes. It's all about the money. If something else pays more for less effort ... they will go do that.

For others around retirement age ... it's a question about how they want to spend their remaining days on earth. The baby boomers have been retiring at a much higher rate since the beginning of the pandemic. It really makes you re-assess your priorities in life when there's this thing running around out there that especially likes to kill older people.

I believe that youtube has taken alot of traffic away. it is alot faster to search how to scrap something on there than wait for a reply on here. I have a crappy channel and alot of my how to videos views come from google search.

i know alot of us have been doing this along time. established our selfs and moved away from the "Street scrapping" scene. I think thats what most people come here do and see that we dont really talk about the street scrap

I don't publish on Youtube, but I must confess that I like to watch some street scrapping / dumpster diving videos lately. There are some guys who really scrap stuff, but most seems just to pick up curbside and get happy to dump it on the scrap heap for shred price. I won't be surprised if they leave the brass valves on the water heaters or stuff like that. Scrapping metal is tough job, but they lose tons of easy money on their videos.

Its nothing amazing. It started out as a joke pretty much. my old co worker has a channel and hes terrible at making vidoes so i made a channel cause i knew i could make some interesting scrap videos compared from what i seen on youtube. Im not trying to make $$$ off youtube, just making videos cause i get some good stuff from time to time. I only use my phone, i dont have a go pro. i dont go around showing where i get my scrap from. Im sure the shop owners wouldnt like me marching around video taping at or in their warehouses with all their equipment and tools around. Or trying to dumpster dive 1 handed. Pretty much just me loading scrap, acting like a moron, and fooling around in my garage.

The other reason it's so quiet: It's winter. Everyone just kinda "hibernates" some in the winter. It's cold and miserable out there. You're not going to work in miserable weather as much as you will when it's nice. That's why pretty much every E-Waste business out there starts collection events in the spring (Usually around April from what I've seen)

Scrap metal market has been weak on and off - mostly on so I am concentrating on e-scrap mostly.

A reason could be why its quiet is that the forum was down for almost a month if i remember right, also down for days at a time here and there so i guess everyone thinks the sites gone. IDk just throwing that out there.

is it active? not a ton, but I check it every few days to look at new posts. Im sure many other people that have been here a while do also but dont comment as much. When I was most active on here, it was maybe a handful of 5-10 people who mostly were active and commented on stuff.

Not much to say....gather as much ewaste as possible......Process for better than scrap....Break down rest......Dispose of metals/plastic/etc.......Send off board to buyer.....Rinse and Repeat.....A few of our rural scrappers have some interesting stuff but here in the city not hardly worth driving across town for a random washing machine.....I am still looking for a partner in ewaste business or to take over an existing operation........I do check forum for new posts daily and glad to see some people still posting

IDK ... this doesn't really seem political. It's more economic in nature. Wages are going up. Comm prices are going up but the cost of living is going up faster. Money is getting tight. My bet is that 2022 is gonna be one of those years where most folks just barely scrape by. They're gonna be in an ugly mood come the mid term elections and they're gonna blame whoever is sitting in power.

A lot of us are also not too active since we're not looking actively for more clients. I work with quite a few forum members, and I'm just one guy, so I wouldn't be able to take on too many more clients. The people who work with me know how to find me when they have a lot ready

Today it is 5 F outside and we have snow everywhere since two months. During winter, construction and scrap yard operations slow down and metal prices are lower, plus we had pandemic restrictions on top of all that. Everyone's inside anyway 'til it get warmer. Unless one still has microscrapping to do in a heated location or regular customers, there's not much picking and scrapping to do up here before maybe 2 months.
