Can't Say No but Man it is Overwhelming

Just after the news that Dad has cancer the phone calls started coming in from around the state on different electronic items that needed to be picked up. This was fine with me because I wanted something to keep my mind off of everything.



Anyway the call came in from a place in Fort Wayne that had 7 gaylords full of monitors. They also wanted to buy all of the ink cartidges that we had. Great! This was going to save a lot of time and energy and we were going to get some product out of it.

Well Chris (the guy who started off as my employee but later became my partner when he bought part of the shares) and I decided that we would rent a truck to get the monitors. The only truck we could find on short notice was a 26 foot so we took it even though we figured it would be overkill. Well we were certainly wrong.

When we arrived at the place there was actually 15 gaylords full of monitors! So we loaded them all up and headed back to the shop to get them off the truck. By the time we got the truck unloaded and returned my wife called and said the place wanted us back there the next day because they had more for us.

Well we went back the next day with the truck and they had 17 gaylords and 7 skids full of monitors for us. By the time we got it all loaded I do not think that we could have shoved one more single thing in that truck.

It was just amazing...Final count 897 monitors and they said that they will have more for us in the next week or so.

While I was very glad to have the distraction, it is overwhelming to see all of them and work every day about 10 hours and have it appear as though you have not touched a thing.

The new employee I hired has been given her trial by fire in the last week and a half. She has done nothing but tear down monitors. It will be interesting when we get them all torn down and she has to start working on the copper yokes

what do you do with the crt's scrapper...I can't find anyplace to take them without a charge. Seems like I recall you saying you have an outlet but I can't remember. I cannot imagine that many monitors in one place, except maybe when snodly described swinging on vines in a warehouse full ! Congrats computerscrapper...good to hear from you.

Yeah we do have an outlet over in Ohio but we have also built ourselves a machine to start processing them ourselves. We found that we could sell the leaded glass to a lead smelter. Of course you have to have a lot of the glass because they only buy it by the ton but it will be worth it to get rid of the tubes. The front screen glass is simple container glass and can be sold to a lot of places.

As far i have heard thre was only one smelter, located in missouri that does the smelting.

yeah, I found a co with locations in Atlanta and Tallahassee, but they charge to take them...they pay for plastic...but you have to have a ton. To my visitors it looks like I have a ton !

The machine is actually working. Chris managed to build it without my help ( I would have been more of a problem than a solution lol) and we have processed about 150 tubes thus far. It took some doing and a lot of testing to get the right wire for the hot wire part and all that. We burned up quite a few before it was perfect but thus far it is doing well. The machine actually goes a lot faster than I would have imagined.

The smelters do charge to take them whole but they pay for clean lead glass. That is the real trick to it. It has to be 97.8% clean for them to pay. Otherwise they will simply accept it. This has more to do with scraping the labels and stuff off the funnel glass and also cutting the tube in half in the right spot to get only lead glass.
