    Hard drive deconstruction.

    Just to avoid a spanking:
Yes, I have introduced myself and yes I have searched the archives for the answer.
    My question is this.
When I am deconstructing a hard drive I end up with the bearing/spinning part in the middle. It is mostly al but has ferrous inserts. Does anyone break these down, and how?
I can't seem to find a way to seperate the AL from the steel.

That is the motor. We usually just put them in with other motors( like out of floppy,cd rom drives ) and smaller transformers. On the pressed in ones, just turn them upside down and use a punch or smaller chisel and hit the center shaft and drive the motor out. I usually set the drive on a smaller cement block with holes in them, and drive the motor down thru the hole. Usually one or two whacks will do it. Certain older ones have screws holding them in.

That's what spins the platters so the heads can read and write to them, here's one of my break-down's of the older HD's.
