Went for a washer and drier and got...

So I got an email a couple months back from a lady that stated that her mother had to replace her washer and drier and wondered if I would come and take them. I asked her my usual questions, Where are you located, are the appliances easily accessible or do I have to remove from the building, ect. After a couple emails we came to an agreement and I was to go and get them once they got them out of the basement and put into the garage, and to cover my fuel and time I would charge her $20.

That was back in July, on Monday of this past week I heard from her again stating that the appliances were ready for pickup. So I went today to get them unknowing that it was going to be at an old apple orchard. I loaded the appliances and while talking with the mother she asked me if I take anything else, I stated that I will take anything metal, recyclable, and anything that I could resell. The then proceeded to ask if I was interested in a couple plows. We went to see these plows and they are in good usable condition, she just has no use for them and she wants them gone and cleaned up, then I started looking around and the entire hedge row was full of old farm implements and I asked her if she wanted them gone and she said with excitement, YES!!!

So what was going to be a couple appliances turned out to be 2 or 3 loads of farm implements and scrap. There is even a cracked up Subaru Station Wagon that she wants gone.

I will post pictures tomorrow after I get some work done.

Heck ya!! A little cash would go along ways to having her mention your name to the neighbor down the way. Love to see some pics.

I agree with others, do her right, since she is doing you right, and give her some cash. She is giving you (depending on how much your getting, and the price) a few hundred in scrap metal. Good deeds, always get returned!

So my first load from the farm is complete, I cleaned up the area where my client wants to level and put a gazebo and this is what I brought home.

    My trailer loaded

My Truck loaded with BBQ grills and other goodies.

A 3 point hitch back blade.

This is a pull behind sprayer with a 3.5hp brigs motor.

I believe this is a harrow, its also a 3 point hitch.
If you look behind it you can see a couple coils of cable.

I see many of you are worried about me paying the lady, first she hasn't asked for any and she is more than happy to get rid of the clutter around her property. It is a real mess. Now with that being said, although I wont be giving her any money I will be giving her some of my time, she has 2 large pine trees that came down during Hurricane Irene and she asked if I knew anybody that could cut them up and clean up the mess. I told her that I will do it for her at no charge. She was very appreciative of everything I am doing for her. I figure if she would have to call someone in to cut the trees up it would cost her about $250 each. It will only cost me a few gallons of gas, a couple chains, and about a days worth of time. I feel it is an even trade.

My next load will be Tuesday or Wednesday with I go up with my friend with his rollback to grab the car. He is going to pay me $150 for the car.

Stay tuned for more progress and pictures.

Below are a few more pictures from today's haul, looks like we can only insert 5 images per post. Oh well, I can add another reply. LOL

An older Simplicity Garden Tractor. Has a 3 point hitch and hydraulics and a live PTO in the front for the snow-blower.

A friend of mine does tree work, so I know what it can run. You doing it free for her, in exchange for all the scrap metal, is fair.

Is he a junk yard guy? Normally, they are the only ones that will pay scrap yard prices or better for cars. Just curious.

Depending on how big it is, $150 is about right. I know the prices here will range from $150 to $300 depending on what the price is for the day.

My friend has been in the business for many years, long before I born. But he goes around and buys junk cars form people, strips them down for parts and scraps the rest. I have helped in his yard a few times stripping cars, its pretty fun.

Well, I run this from my home, so I have just always removed the tires, and battery, and drained the fuel tank.

So my question is, if you don't mind, what do you generally strip out from the cars to make it worth your time, and what do you do with the stuff that has been stripped?

Depends on the vehicles. If they are a model that the parts are in demand he will sit it at the top of his yard and sell the parts out of it. If its a model that is a dime a dozen, he will take the engine, transmission, radiator, catiletic converter, and batteries out of the car then stuff the car full of shred before crushing the roof down. He will then take 3 or 4 vehicles in at a time this way.

Some cars have aluminum rims also, he piles these up until he can fill his tri-axle dump truck full of rims and takes them in all at once.

Its a pretty impressive operation for a one man show. Its fun to watch him rip the engines out of the cars, sometimes he will live the car right off the ground by the engine and shake it to pop the engine out, very comical.

Check your yard, he used to take the tires off the cars before taking them in until the scrap yard told him that he was allowed 5 tires per car.

So if it is a car you see everywhere, he will take the engine, transmission, cat converter, etc and take it all out to sell....Nice idea, but I am to impatient for that lol.

I wish our scrap yard allowed us to leave tires on. You have to take them off, and the rubber, or they charge you for it.

That Simplicity Landlord is from the early 1960s and I can GUARANTEE you that it is worth more than scrap. I love old mowers and have never seen one like that. From what I can see it's rusty but complete. AND IT HAS ATTACHMENTS!!! You've got to be kidding me. And you got it for free...some people have all the luck. Please try to sell that before you scrap it. It looks too good to mash it. Okay, I'm done drooling...

Oh don't worry, I love old iron like this. The tractor is a 1964 Simplicity Landlord. Rest assured that I wont be scrapping this vintage machine. It is complete and I plan on restoring it back to its former glory. My plans for this is to fix it up to working condition, putting the snow blower on it and use it for my winter maintenance.

If those plans fall thru, I will sell the assembly to somebody who intends on restoring it. I have an idea of a few potential buyers who would love to get their hands on it.

    Time will tell.

Any idea where they are located, as I didn't see that on the site?

I took a cat one time to a buyer here, but it definitely wasn't work the little bit of money I got for it. I was always told that they get good money, but I sure didnt.

That is possible. My father in law, owns a body shop in our town, and I got it from him.

I always heard you got like $50 to $150, but when I took it in, I got like slightly under $20 for it.

About 1 1/2 years ago, cops around here were running around like chickens with their heads cut off, because people be going to car dealerships, auto body repair, and just any car period and taking the cats off of them at night.

Then when they put the word out to the scrapping companies, and started making a few arrests, people quit.

What is the actual price for a cat converter, generally?
