theres a first time for everything I guess..

So here it goes..yesterday on my way home I took a small short cut down a side street and see a top load washer out at the street. sweet, right? it actually looked in nice shape. so I open my tailgate, load it in the back of my truck and get back in my truck ready to leave, then my girlfriend looks at me and says "jeff theres a sign on the inside of the lid, I dont know if that was trash" (the lid opened up when i slid the washer in my truck). So now I feel awkward..I get out and look at the "sign" and can barely make out what I think says $150. I then take the washer out of my bed and put it back where it was and then decided to ring the doorbell just to make sure it wasnt a yardsale leftover or whatever..so a woman answers the door and I explain to her what happened and she says to me "oh yes I shut the lid of the washer when it began to rain" (hiding her for sale sign) She thanked me for being honest and I made sure I suggested to her that she puts the washer further back in her driveway with a more obvious for sale sign on it. This was a first for me and I didnt really enjoy the experience. Anybody ever ran into a similar situation?

Can't say I've ever had that happen, but while on the subject of barely legible signs, those who post yard sale signs written in pencil really annoy me.

Your right it goes a long way. But if not for his girlfriend he would've been a long way from that place.

Sounds like you've got a GF that is helping and looking out for you. I bet good things will be coming your (and her) way because of the honest approach.

i started scrapping as an honest way to make a dollar. I respect anyone who keeps these ethics. its easy to cross the line sometimes, but its better to do things right.

Stealing scrap is one of those things thats "cheaper, but it will cost you more" if you know what i mean

thanks for the replys. Im definately glad she spotted the sign, because if not I would have found it when I was unloading it at my house. There are definately people out there (unfortunately) that would have just taken it, but those are the people who make everyone else look like scumbags.

Honesty goes a long way. Even with the honest mistake you made..
She would have thought that it was stolen & that changes peoples mindset, which then spreads out into the general population as she would have repeated the story to a bunch of other people.

On the other hand, since you were honest & informed her, she has a new-positive story to tell & maybe $150 as well....

I have found quite a amazing amount of stuff in my scrapmetal travels, whats valuable goes into the Police station, what gets claimed was valuable to the looser & what dosn't, I sell for a honest $ or more.

Also, I think the Police really enjoy doing the detective work on the lost stuff, positive kudos to the Police & some valuable investigation experience without a downside.
I have a wee stack of lost property forms now.
