I just took in two loads. 1185 lbs of short steel an 5 lvs of aluminum for a total of 108 bucks. The yard is only a quarter mile down the road but I probably won't be back there. They were rude and I even had to unload my own stuff

how many people dont unload there own stuff? ive only had help one time when i was at the yard alone and had a 400lb furnace on my pickup. they used a forklift after i dragged it to the end of my bed. otherwise, i have always had to unload my own stuff. and so does everyone else at the yards i go to

I ALWAYS have help.....but, if I were you, I'd go more than once just to see if it's always the case or just someone in a bad mood, or real busy or...whatever...esp. if the yard is close to you.
also, if they see how serious you are as a supplier, and you bring in a lot of volume, you will establish bargaining rights on your scrap prices. get to know the owner and you will be surprised what kind of deals you can workout.
Like Dee, I don't unload my trailer but probably for a different reason.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.
I really hope it's not for the same reason,,, LOLI don't unload my trailer but probably for a different reason.

I love throwing my stuff in the massive scrap pile... Probably my favorite part of the scrap yard, minus the paycheck.

I unload mine unless it's something heavy I loaded with the skidsteer. Maybe I need to find a pretty gf and they'll be falling over each other to unload.

So am I the only one that finds it crappy dude was only payed 100 bucks for 1200lbs of short steel? I get 295 a ton on that. I would tell that yard to kiss the split for sure. Also, I don't have girl pants on and I unload my own stuff.
They paid him .091 a lb. for his steel, some other guys were talking about steel taking a hit on the price so he might not be too far off. All 3 of my yards close by, you unload yourself unless you have to have help then they will send someone out or on larger steel loads they use the crane with electric magnet.

Qw have 3 yards in a short vicinity around here. One is for ferrous and the other 2 are for non ferrous. The non ferrous yard that I go to has a few guys that help unload. It is a matter need for them. Without the unloaders, the line getting in would quickly stretch around the block and everyone would just drive up the street to the next guy. I usually have to wait 5 or 10 minutes to get to the scale area. It would be hell without them helping everyone.
At my yard we help you unload most of the time, mainly to sort and avoid people dumping off household garbage. If we know you and you have the ability then unload themselves.
They never unload loads at my yard either unless it's a vehicle or something large that you can't do yourself. They figure if you got it on there you can get it off! When I first started going to this yard, they'd look the load over pretty carefully, but I've been there so much now they call be by my first name and just give the load a quick glance.
The yard I take my steel to is the same way. There is a guy out at the pile to help unload and keep an eye out for people dumping washers filled with dirt and stuff filled with water. Or any other dirtbag tricks they pull. Those guys make us all look bad! That is why I get so upset when we get that type of posting here!!
They use to get excited when they would see me pull up with a bunch of ac cabinets in my truck. They were thinking they would find motors and wire in them. They learned that there is not anything left when I'm done. I do see a lot of complete units there dumped all the time. They put them in there own pile.
Just got word that there price at my local yard just went up a little to $0.105 per pound, that's up 1.5 cents much to my surprise.
As for copper I keep it in trash cans with wheels. Got to love wheels. When I go to cash in on copper I don't need to fuss with a bunch of buckets and stuff I just wheel out my cans. I am able to load and unload in a jiff.

My yard will unload large loads with their equipment, but they warn you they may scratch or dent your truck/trailer. In that case all repairs are on you. I rarely let them unload it because of this reason. Like rca987 I love throwing my stuff out anyway. It's fun and a good way to get the days frustration out. Flinging iron through the air and hearing the clang of iron hitting iron! Gotta love it!
1185 lbs of short steel should have netted you almost $1300 (sorry I meant $130) and AL is .50 per pound but different areas seem to pay different, the yards must have there reason . The area I live in has large trucking company's , so they get the metal out to the ship yards with minimal effort
